Study: European east-west freight traffic to double by 2030

European east-west freight traffic will double between 2005 and 2030, according to a study recently carried out by Basel (Switzerland)-based ProgTrans and published by the Berlin (Germany)-based Institute for Mobility Research. The fastest growth is predicted for the period up to 2015. ProgTrans director Stephan Kritzinger emphasised that “we would actually need to build an additional three-lane motorway on the east-west axis to cope with the increase in volumes.” The burgeoning goods flows from east to west will benefit German exports and domestic consumption the most, compared with other western countries, such as France or the Netherlands. Kritzinger estimated that road would account for 70% of west-east traffic in 2030, compared with 67% in 2005. His prognosis for rail was 25%, along with 5% for inland navigation. In the other direction, he said that rail will account for about 19%, which will be due to the vast distances to be traversed in Russia in particular. In this direction he estimated that road would account for only 35%, mineral oil and gas pipelines for 42%, and inland barges for 4.2%

Palletline invests GBP 20m in new hub

Palletline has announced plans to invest GBP 20 million in new Central Hub premises on a 15-acre site in Solihull.

The operational systems planned for the new hub have been designed to enable the organisation to function more efficiently than any other palletised distribution network in the country, creating the systems and capacity to process more than 25,000 pallets in each 24-hour time window.

Palletline’s new hub will be the industry’s first drive-through, side-load operation.

An on-site quality control centre will consist of vehicle scanning lanes capable of processing eighty vehicles an hour and an undercover area for load checking. This system effectively separates quality control from sortation activities and enables implementation of rigorous freight checking procedures to achieve total traceability and service consistency.

Every vehicle coming onto the site will be issued with a data card to track its exact location, identifying every pallet on every vehicle and highlighting freight requiring prioritisation for meeting connections.

Web-based systems will be used to create ‘virtual bay’ facilities accessible to every member company, clearly highlighting volumes and consignment information.

The move will also secure Palletline’s expansion plans, yielding capacity for growth through to 2020, more than trebling existing pallet throughput capacity. Login or register to post.

New Palletways Hub

Palletways has opened a new 50,000ft2 Scottish hub in Livinston, West Lothian. The Lord Provost, Tom Kerr, Palletways member companies and customers celebrated the opening at a specially organised launch.

The new hub in Livingston replaces a smaller site in Broxburn and provides customers with Scottish, UK-wide and pan-European express delivery services for small consignments of palletised freight. The size of the old site was restricting growth, and new premises were required to take the Palletways operation in Scotland to the next level. The new site is 50 pct larger with a total area of 50,000 sq ft.

Recently appointed Depot Manager, Jon Fullarton, comments: “The location is ideal as it lies to the south of both the M8 Motorway, the major route from Edinburgh to Glasgow, and the M9 that runs up to Stirling and beyond.

All goods bound within Scotland will be delivered via the new Livingston hub, whilst nationwide and pan-European orders will also be fulfilled via a hub facility in Lichfield, West Midlands.

A key feature of the new location is that the hub will be complemented by Palletways’ unique palletised consignment stockholding solution, giving quick and easy access to customers’ stored goods on site in Livingston to the Palletways national and international networks.

Customers who use Palletways in Scotland include Simpson Strong-Tie, a major timber-to-timber and timber-to-masonry connector company that supplies builders merchants and DIY outlets, Mizuno Golf, manufacturer of high quality golf clubs, bags, clothing and accessories and Wallace Cameron, who supply first aid products and services to a number of retailers such as Boots, Marks & Spencer and Halfords.
