UK Pallets launches new European distribution service

Business Post Group’s palletised freight operation, UK Pallets, is launching a new European service following a deal with global logistics services provider Dachser.

Under the agreement, more than 70 UK Pallets members will now have easy and cost-effective access to Dachser’s extensive pan-European distribution network.
A number of new features have been created to support the service, including an easy-to-use online quotation system and pallet-based tariff structure that offers simplified and improved rates.
This streamlined solution will offer substantial savings of up to 15% compared with previous ad-hoc export services.
UK Pallets will consolidate daily shipments at its national hub in Lichfield for onward connection into Dachser’s nightly departures to Europe, ensuring fast and reliable door-to-door transit times. Each consignment will be bar-coded and tracked throughout the journey to provide online status information and proof of delivery.
Dachser has been a member of UK Pallets since 2001, with the UK distribution network handling all incoming nationwide deliveries from mainland Europe outside of the Northampton area. The new service is designed to improve accessibility and enhance the service offer for UK Pallets’ members.

USPS flex fuel vehicles lowered fuel efficiency

The U.S. Postal Service tried to do the right thing, buying more than 30,000 American-made flex fuel vehicles capable of running on ethanol. However, the vehicles, purchase from 1998 to 2003, ended up decreasing overall fuel efficiency by 29% and increasing gasoline consumption by 1.5 million gallons, according to a USPS study.

The plan went wrong in two ways. The vehicles had larger than necessary engines and distribution of E85, the 85% ethanol blend of fuel, is still largely restricted to the midwest.

As a result, vehicles outside the midwest were run on gasoline, and their engines, which were larger than predecessor Jeep engines, burned more fuel.

In addition, E85, though cleaner burning than gasoline, contains less energy. It takes 1.33 gallons of E85 to travel the same distance a a gallon of pure gasoline. Thus, fuel efficiency was reduced even farther.

The USPS said in the future, new flex-fuel vehicles will only be deployed where E85 is conveniently available and competitively priced. The study said the price of E85 must be 30% less than gasoline to be cost effective.

The program was most successful in Minnesota, where the number of stations selling E85 increased from 15 to more than 200 over the last 5 years.

The flex-fuel vehicles purchased included Long Life Vehicles (LLV), Dodge Caravans and Chevrolet Uplanders.

The study also details the results of smaller-scale experiments with fuel cell, hybrid, electric and compressed natural gas vehicles.

Ecodriving equivalent to taking three million cars off the road (UK)

A carbon saving equivalent to taking three million cars off the road could be achieved by simply encouraging drivers to shift gear and adopt a more environmentally-aware approach to driving, a new study revealed today.

Despite the potential cash and carbon savings, drivers still lack awareness of environmentally-friendly driving practices, called ecodriving, according to a report by Forum for the Future and commissioned by Royal Mail.

The report, Fuelling Green Driving, reveals that there is still a long way to go to encourage consumers and employers to embrace ecodriving as nearly half the population (43 per cent) don’t know what it is. Furthermore, 32 per cent of people surveyed said they have heard of it, but have never even been tempted to try it.

Recognising the benefits, Royal Mail has launched a company wide awareness programme to help its 180,000 people switch to greener driving, whether for social or work driving. And almost 1,000 Royal Mail drivers have received in-depth classroom training to help them adopt more environmentally-friendly motoring practices with plans to train a further 2,000 in the coming months.

The report highlights that only one per cent of the population has received ecodriving training from an instructor. Moreover, a lack of information is a major barrier to ecodriving as 59 per cent of people require more information about the steps they need to take to encourage them to drive in an environmentally-friendly way. This was particularly prevalent among women where this figure rose to 72 per cent.
