UK Government gives £450M aid to rural Post Offices

The government is to provide up to 450 mln stg in financial support to rural post offices, said David Mills, chief executive of Post Office Ltd.

He said the spending, which would involve 150 mln stg annually over the next three years, will be used to keep the entire 8,500 rural branches operating.

“Without this money Post Office Ltd would not have been able to continue operating rural branches, and as a result up to 80 per cent may have closed,” he said.

The Government will announce today that the threatened focal points for thousands of small communities are to receive pounds 48million over the next three years.

Royal Mail at risk from watchdogs

Royal Mail chairman Allan Leighton is heading for a showdown with regulators over calls to break up the postal service as part of plans to increase market competition.

Mr Leighton is likely to warn a trade and industry select committee tomorrow that an enforced separation of the delivery network, including all postmen, from the rest of the group could spell disaster for its three-year recovery plan.

Royal Mail insiders believe highly regarded Mr Leighton may even resign if further controls are placed on what he sees as an already over-regulated body.

Crozier 'in line' for Royal Mail

ADAM CROZIER, the former chief executive of the Football Association who resigned after a bust-up with football club chairmen, is thought to be a candidate to run Royal Mail.

Allan Leighton, the Royal Mail chairman who is also a non-executive director of Leeds United, is expected to make a decision on the position in the next few days. Four candidates are on his list, though Mr Leighton yesterday declined to comment on whether Mr Crozier was one of them.

Mr Crozier left the FA five weeks ago after a dispute with Premier League chairmen, who wanted a bigger say in how the FA’s revenues are distributed.
