Post Office UK: Non-liners miss out on GBP 4.5 billion savings per year

Families with broadband can save GBP 70 per month through online access to cheaper household goods and services, according to new research from the Post Office. Those who are online paint a picture of a ‘broad-bound’ society as 96 per cent consider internet access to be a lifestyle necessity they could not live without.

Yet one third of UK households are missing out on these savings, and the wider benefits, because they are still not online. A total of almost GBP 4.5 billion of potential savings are being missed by non-web users each year, in what is a worrying effect of a deepening digital exclusion.

Broadband in the Home: An Analysis of the Financial Costs and Benefits was commissioned by Post Office Telecoms to calculate, for the first time, the financial impact of the UK’s digital divide. Fear of the initial expense of getting a PC and internet connection, or fear of online fraud, is actually deepening the digital divide amongst those who could stand to benefit most from getting online.

One year on from the launch of its broadband service, this research will inform the Post Office’s continuing work to get the digitally excluded online by improving accessibility and transparency.

Royal Mail Group shakes up research structure (UK)

Royal Mail Group is dissolving its centralised research and insight function in favour of dedicated teams for each of its main brands: Royal Mail, Post Office and Parcelforce.

Crispin Beale, who led the Centre for Customer Insight & Competitor Intelligence as Director of Insight, Intelligence and Analysis, is to leave the company at the end of the month.

Sinead Jefferies will lead Royal Mail’s business intelligence team, with responsibility for research, insight, competitor and marketing intelligence.

A decision is still to be made on who will head up the Post Office research team, Beale said.

Dick Stead, Sales and Marketing Director for Parcelforce, will oversee research for that brand.

The restructure is not expected to lead to the scrapping of the 32-agency insight and analysis roster, which was appointed earlier this year to stand for a four-year period.

Beale said: “Different parts of the organisation have different research needs which need different skill sets, but all of those skill sets exist within the roster. I would envisage that the group will carry on working with that roster and won’t be needing to change it.”

J&E Shepherd Retains Royal Mail Estate Management

Following a tender, Chartered Surveyors J&E Shepherd has retained the contract as Estates Management Consultants for Royal Mail’s Scottish portfolio of more than 300 properties.

Having acted as Estates Management Consultants to Royal Mail’s Scottish portfolio for the last four years, Shepherd’s contract retention means that it will continue to manage the postal group’s estate for the next two years, with an option for a further two years beyond that.

That comprehensive estate management service encompasses all Royal Mail delivery offices, mail centres, post office branches and other sundry operational and investment properties in Scotland and involves undertaking rent reviews, lease renewals and ongoing asset management. Outwith the estate management contract, J&E Shepherd has also advised Royal Mail on various key property acquisitions and disposals throughout Scotland.

In each of the past three years, Royal Mail has presented J&E Shepherd with a coveted Silver Award in recognition of the first class supplier service it has provided to them.

Royal Mail confident over deliveries despite proposed strike

Royal Mail has said it is “confident” that its letters services “will be maintained” if the Communication Workers Union (CWU) goes ahead with a proposed three-day strike beginning next Tuesday (23 September).
The strikes, which are due to begin at 6am on 23 September and finish at 6am on 26 September, cover staff employed by Romec that work in technical grades including electronic security and buildings maintenance engineers.

The engineers are threatening to strike over changes being imposed on attendance patterns.

However, a spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail is confident that its letters services will be maintained should any industrial action by Romec go ahead and we are working closely with Romec to ensure back-up services for the entire mail operation are maintained.”

Industrial action by Royal Mail is estimated to have cost the direct mail industry around GBP 8m in 2007.

Post Office may go into mobiles after success of broadband (UK)

The Post Office is considering launching a mobile phone service after the success of its move into the residential broadband market, which has given the company more than 500,000 customers only a year after the launch.
Having just reduced its broadband prices, the Post Office also reckons that it is benefiting from the credit crunch as cash-strapped homeowners look for the best deals in the market.
Telecoms is a crucial area for the Post Office as it looks to increase revenues, and it is roughly on track to hit its target of a million broadband users by 2011, according to Martin Moran, head of telecommunications at the Post Office.
The Post Office’s broadband and home phone service has been particularly popular among lower income households, as it allows consumers to pay cash at their local branch rather than signing a direct debit. But the worsening economic climate has attracted consumers from higher socio-economic groups.
It is also very interested in offering a mobile phone service, using the infrastructure of one of the five existing mobile phone networks. Moran said a mobile phone service was still “in the planning” stage but something could also be rolled out next year.
