Jobs go as Royal Mail centre axed

Almost 100 jobs are to go at a Royal Mail customer services centre in Essex.
The company has announced the office in Colchester will close with the loss of 97 jobs as part of plans to merge the service into six national centres.

A Royal Mail spokesman said voluntary redundancy or alternative roles in a different department would be offered to those whose jobs would be going.

The spokesman said services to customers would not be affected by the changes, due to be completed by March.

The move follows the end of Royal Mail’s monopoly of the postal industry, earlier this year, forcing it to deal with competitors.

Dutch TNT and UK Royal Mail in race for ABX Belgium Distribution

Dutch mail and express deliveries group TNT NV and UK rival Royal Mail are the two remaining bidders for ABX Belgium Distribution, Belgian De Tijd newspaper said on November 18, 2006.

The owner, Belgian railways SNCB/NMBS, aims to complete the deal within three weeks.

The EU competition authorities obliged NMBS to sell the unit by the end of 2006.

ABX Belgium Distribution is a market leader in the domestic parcel deliveries market. The unit has an annual revenue of 90 mln euro (USD 115.5 mln) and a 700-strong workforce. Furthermore, 650 trucks of third parties are running for the company.

ABX Belgium Distribution was earlier part of ABX Logistics Worldwide SA/NV (ABX), which was sold by NMBS to UK private equity firm 3i Group Plc and the management in August 2006. The deal included air cargo, sea cargo, customs, logistics and international transport activities of ABX Belgium.

TNT picks Four to handle battle against Royal Mail

TNT Post has briefed Four Communications to manage its corporate reputation as the delivery firm seeks to grab market share from Royal Mail.

The UK arm of the Netherlands-based company was launched two years ago after Royal Mail’s 350-year monopoly ended. Letter-delivery was opened up to full competition this year.

Four’s hire spells the end of a two-year relationship with Financial Dynamics.

Account manager Lucy Bennett said the agency would promote TNT Post’s services to the business sector via national, regional and specialist titles.

The Four team, headed by CEO Nan Williams, reports to TNT Post CEO Nick Wells, although its day-to-day contact is head of marcoms Simon Dolph.

TNT Post has won ‘downstream access’ contracts with Barclays, LloydsTSB, BSkyB and Telewest – it collects and sorts all mail from the companies before final delivery by Royal Mail. The firm is currently working to cut Royal Mail out of the loop altogether.

Online shoppers get the one o’clock Friday feeling

Friday lunchtime is the most popular time of the week for online “Work shopping” as people take advantage of Internet access in the office and start the weekend early, Royal Mail research revealed today.

Nearly two thirds (65 per cent) of online shoppers who have access to the Internet at work admitted they are likely to buy during the week – and 1pm Fridays is the most popular time with one in eight placing an order.

The research also revealed that ‘Work shoppers’ tend to spend more online, with an average of GBP725 spent on goods bought via the Internet in the first eight months of the year, compared to the national average of GBP609.

The research is released as IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group), the industry body for online retailing, today launched its Internet Shopping is Safe campaign, which includes a guide to effective, convenient and safe Internet shopping.

Royal Mail’s study also found that other popular weekdays for ‘Work shopping’ are Mondays and Wednesdays, as employees use online shopping to deal with the post-weekend and mid-week blues. This reflects additional research findings that show 60 per cent of Internet shoppers work full-time with 51 per cent having Internet access at work.

Post offices may be given freedom to take on rivals

The Government hinted yesterday that Britain’s post offices should be allowed to take on competitors’ business to help put the network on a sure financial footing. Ministers will soon set the level of the annual pounds 150 million subsidy for the post office network after 2008. If it is cut heavily, thousands of post offices will have to close.

Mr Fitzpatrick said part of the solution was for the post offices, which are losing between pounds 2 million and pounds 4 million a week, to be allowed to look for new business. Under the current arrangement sub-post offices, which are private businesses, can only handle post for Royal Mail under an exclusive contract, rather than for other carriers such as DHL.

They are also not allowed to have alternative payment terminals in their shops, such as Pay Point terminals, which are now needed to sell TV licences.

Mr Fitzpatrick suggested that this sort of deal was likely to have to change. “We are doing all we can to help Post Office Limited provide new financial products.

“They are the biggest supplier of personal insurance, the biggest supplier of foreign currency, they have recently launched products like a new saver account and they are migrating people from post office card to other bank accounts.”

The National Federation of Subpostmasters has asked for a range of financial products including a student account, for them to sell.
