Just three UK post offices make a profit

Only three Crown Post Offices in the whole of the UK are making a profit, highlighting the scale of losses at the network of high street branches, it was revealed today. But despite losses totalling GBP71 million in the last financial year, Royal Mail bosses insisted they only had plans to close around 30 Crown offices in the next five years. Chairman Allan Leighton said five would close next year and six the year after, up to a maximum of 30 over five years out of the current total of 555. The losses equated to GBP127,000 for each Crown office, the Royal Mail boss told MPs on the Commons Trade and Industry Select Committee.

New head for UK Royal Mail pension fund

Royal Mail has appointed a new chairman of its pension fund, currently facing a Pounds 2.5bn deficit. Jane Newell, a non-executive director of United Utilities and chairman of three other pension schemes, will lead the fund’s trustees as they try to solve its financial problems. Royal Mail’s pension hole is the result of the fall in the stock market in the late 1990s and the 13-year contributions “holiday” enjoyed by the group on actuarial advice. Actuaries discovered the deficit in March last year and Royal Mail faces payments of as much as Pounds 800m a year to keep the fund going. Ms Newell replaces Roy Chapman, chairman for the past 10 years, who is retiring at the end of the year. Royal Mail said the change had been planned for some time and was not linked to concerns over the size of the deficit.

Companies’ internet sales double in a year

British companies sold more than twice as much over the internet last year than in 2002 as the manufacturing sector discovered the virtues of selling its products online.

The value of online sales overall jumped from Pounds 19bn in 2002 to Pounds 39.5bn in 2003 as business-to-business sales more than doubled. Manufacturing led the trend, with sales almost trebling from Pounds 5.5bn to Pounds 14.6bn, according to official data released yesterday.

The rise was partly driven by manufacturers requiring their customers to order on the web to keep costs down, said the Office for National Statistics. Similarly, influential buyers such as supermarkets also insisted on being able to order online from their suppliers.

PPA and UK Royal Mail reach deal on size-based pricing

Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier has announced an agreement between Royal Mail and the PPA on size-based pricing. Speaking at the PPA’s CEO Conference, Crozier said that the two organisations had reached an agreement on the last outstanding issue that had divided the pair. This concerned the tolerance threshold of the surface of a mailing piece of 10mm thickness or above, where if the threshold was exceeded the item would be classed as a packet rather than a large letter, resulting in a substantial increase in costs. The PPA has succeeded in convincing the Royal Mail to increase this threshold from 4mm to 5mm.
