6,000 calls that say Scotland is fed up with postal failures

Public dissatisfaction with the nation’s postal service is running at an all-time high – with a hotline set up to take complaints about wrongly delivered mail receiving more than 6,000 calls in four days, The Scotsman has learned.
Postwatch, the consumer watchdog that represents the interests of Royal Mail customers, was overwhelmed with calls after the launch of its “Stamp Out Misdelivered Mail” campaign. Angry customers complained about receiving letters addressed to strangers, having their post go missing and only receiving important items, such as bank statements and credit cards, because strangers forwarded them on. Postwatch had been expecting about 1,000 calls in the first week and was shocked by the scale of public response.

UK Royal Mail tells MPs it will stamp out crime

Royal Mail said it prosecuted 300 of its staff last year for stealing from the post and other offences and has an 180-strong team dedicated to investigating crime in an effort by management to quash concerns about postal security.

Allan Leighton, chairman of the postal group, and Adam Crozier, chief executive, were yesterday grilled by MPs on various aspects of Royal Mail’s three-year turnaround plan, from post office closures to the scrapping of the second daily delivery. The executives told MPs that Royal Mail was reviewing its hiring policies and would cut its use of casual staff, who are not always properly vetted or trained.

In response to questions about a recent television documentary that showed negligence and theft among Royal Mail workers, Mr Crozier said the prosecutions had been for random individual acts, that the number of crimes was dropping and that no organised crime or regional pattern had been found.

UK Royal Mail chief executive admits mistakes

Adam Crozier, the Royal Mail chief executive, yesterday insisted that management attempts to shake up the Post Office had not “destroyed” it but admitted they had led to some difficulties. The former Football Association boss was forced to defend the organisation as it came under fire from MPs of all parties at a Commons trade and industry select committee meeting. Mr Crozier admitted being shaken by a recent Channel 4 Dispatches programme highlighting criminality and other failings inside the Post Office but said a range of initiatives had been introduced to deal with this. Three big “change programmes” implemented at the same time had put the Royal Mail under stress. Failed letter delivery targets came along with a return to profit and other successes, he said.

Inquiry Launched into UK Royal Mail

An inquiry has been launched by MPs into the deterioration of postal services in Britain. The trade and industry select committee has requested Royal Mail’s three most senior bosses to appear before them today to explain why deliveries have worsened. Chairman Allan Leighton, Chief Executive Adam Crozier and Operations Director Tom Melvin will be questioned about their implementation of a restructuring plan which involved eliminating the second delivery of the day and has been responsible for a decrease in service quality since Christmas.

UK union accuses Royal Mail of putting profit targets ahead of improvements

Union leaders accused Royal Mail management of putting financial targets ahead of service improvements as the company attempted to turn its fortunes around.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) told the Trade and Industry select committee a massive cost cutting programme to reduce losses was being implemented with no thought of the long term implications. CWU general secretary Billy Hayes told MPs low wages, poor working conditions and the physical demands of carrying extra mail after the introduction of the single delivery had led to low morale among staff. Hayes’ deputy, David Ward, said the Royal mail renewal programme was ‘focusing on finances’ and not looking at service improvements.
