Ex-UK post chief advises Deloitte

Former Royal Mail chief John Roberts has been taken on by Deloitte Consulting as an adviser on the postal industry. Roberts, who will help the post industry team to develop business across Europe, says the postal sector faces “major challenges ahead. With the advent of e-mail and e-commerce, postal companies not only compete with new technologies but must embrace them if they are to succeed”, he says. Roberts, who joined the Post Office, as it was then called, in 1967, became chief executive in 1995 and retired last December.

Last chance for Corbett to put his stamp on UK Royal Mail

Time is running out for Graham Corbett if he wants to complete his task of turning Royal Mail into a functional part of a competitive mail market. The chairman of Postcomm, the postal regulator, has less than a year before he steps down, and he has shifted into fifth gear. “The big challenge this year will be access pricing,” Mr Corbett says, referring to the amount competitors who collect mail would have to pay Royal Mail to sort and deliver their post. Postcomm will issue a determination on UK Mail, a test case, before the end of May and Mr Corbett says he will try to keep the ensuing consultation process down to three months.

Scottish post offices can take a pew as church leaders unveil proposal

A revolutionary plan to save Scotland’s threatened post offices will be unveiled by church leaders today. In a ground breaking decision the Church of Scotland is inviting congregations to use church halls and other buildings as new homes for hundreds of small post offices facing closure. The “pension and a prayer” plan, which is expected to be given approval, will be considered by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland when they meet in Edinburgh next month.

Opus Trust acquires UK Royal Mail's share in Optecon UK

Royal Mail has sold its 50% holding in Optecon the joint venture formed with Opus Trust in November 2001. The 130-staff company was formed in the early 1990s as a transactional mailing division within Royal Mail, but became a separate firm in November 2001 in a joint venture. Optecon operations director Jon Pollett said: ‘We now have a more commercial market edge and we’re no longer focused on selling off the back of Royal Mail.’

UK Postcomm asks customers what they want from the universal postal service

Postcomm has launched a three-month consultation to find out what users expect from the universal postal service currently provided by Royal Mail. A document published by Postcomm today invites postal users for the first time to comment on the universal service, to say what matters to them, and how they expect the service to develop – for example in response to changes in technology.
