UK Royal Mail stems losses by a third in cost-cutting drive

Royal Mail will announce this month that it has reduced operating losses by a third in the first 12 months of chairman Allan Leighton’s three year cost-cutting programme. Despite the slower than expected axeing of second letter deliveries to homes across the country, the loss in the latest financial year is likely to fall to around GBP200m from GBP318 million previously, largely due to better performance at the core mail and Parcelforce businesses.

Royal Mail today announced that it is joining forces with the Management Services Business of Pitney Bowes Inc in the UK to offer bespoke document management solutions to businesses. RMPB Ltd will combine the services of Royal Mail and PBMS UK to offer UK businesses ‘Royal Mail Document Solutions’, a range of bespoke, outsourced document management services and mailroom operations.

Royal Mail’s Mailsort will save UK business millions of pounds a year

This week (May 8th), Royal Mail will reduce the price tariffs for its Mailsort products, a move which will save the marketing community million of pounds a year. Royal Mail will reduce supply chain costs, share savings with customers and simplify the products and pricing for Mailsort 120 & 700. Royal Mail is able to do this by lowering prices and encouraging customers to use Mailsort products that offer mechanised sorting.

VAT on Stamps? – comment from UK Postcomm

The European Commission has published a draft directive which, if agreed by member states, would require VAT to be charged on mail services. However, it is important to remember that Royal Mail cannot currently reclaim VAT that it pays on the services it buys from other companies. Also, the draft directive allows VAT to be charged at a reduced rate. Therefore, if the UK were to charge VAT at around 5%, we believe that this would largely cover the VAT that is currently paid by Royal Mail, so, contrary to the initial press reports, it should not be assumed that stamp prices would have to rise. It seems most unlikely that the UK Government will agree to impose VAT at the full 17.5% and so increase stamp prices by several pence and this is not a course of action that we consider would be in the customers’ best interests.

UK Royal Mail 'losing £2m a week'

The Royal Mail is still losing at least GBP2m a week, its new chief executive has admitted. Adam Crozier told the BBC the continuing “sizeable losses” were disappointing but the company had “definitely turned the corner”. But he added that he still faced a huge task turning things round.
