UK post chief criticised for Highland threat

The regulator for the UK’s postal service yesterday accused the head of the Royal Mail of “holding customers hostage” following a warning that the Highlands’ postal service may be scrapped. Martin Stanley, chief executive of Postcomm, said that comments made last week by Allan Leighton, chairman of the Royal Mail, threatening to increase the isolation of remote communities, were “inexcusable”. In an open letter, Mr Stanley said that any failure to deliver a full postal service to the Highlands area would be met with “vigorous enforcement action by Postcomm”.

The head of the Royal Mail has warned Highlands and Islands customers that their full postal service may be scrapped. Allan Leighton, the organisation’s chairman, said a decision will be taken within the next 12 months to determine whether it will be able to continue fulfilling the same role at the same price as elsewhere in the country. However, Postcomm, the regulatory body, insisted last night that the Royal Mail’s Universal Service Obligation (USO) would have to continue.

Autumn date for UK GBP40m postal centre

Work is well under way on Royal Mail’s new distribution hub near Rugby. The GBP 40 million Crick site, at the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal, will be operational by the autumn and will employ nearly 600 people. The site will be at the centre of Royal Mail’s new transport network which will use roads, rail and air. Mail from all over the country will be processed at the site, which will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
