UK Postal watchdog Corbett to be axed

Postal regulator Graham Corbett is to be ousted by the government in a clear victory for Royal Mail chairman Allan Leighton who has been at war with him over stamp price increases and competition. Announcement of the decision by trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt could be made as early as tomorrow triggering an immediate rush to find a successor. Ms Hewitt will argue that Mr Corbett has successfully completed the start-up phase of regulation in his contractual three year deal but that it is now time to find someone else to develop regulation to a new level.

UK Royal Mail faces watchdog complaint of market abuse

Royal Mail has been accused of “abusing its dominant position in the market” for the delivery of letters by its consumer watchdog, which has filed a special complaint to competition authorities. Postwatch yesterday submitted a “super complaint” to the Office of Fair Trading on behalf of many of Royal Mail’s large customers, saying the mail operator had abused its position by preferring its own mail consolidation business.

UK watchdog attacks mail box changes

Royal Mail has quietly introduced unannounced changes to collection service information displayed on its post boxes, the postal watchdog said yesterday. It no longer guarantees more than one daily collection from letter boxes and has removed tabs which tell customers if they have missed the last post. Boxes have been left overflowing in busy areas as the efficiency drive is rolled out, according to Postwatch, the postal services consumer rights organisation.

Chairman of UK Post Office Ltd appointed

Mike Hodgkinson, the outgoing chief executive of BAA plc, has been appointed Chairman of Post Office Limited, the retailing business of Royal Mail Group, it was announced today. His appointment to the Royal Mail Board was announced in November last year as one of four new non-executive directors. Mr Hodgkinson will take up his additional role on May 1 and he will also become the Royal Mail Board’s senior independent director.

UK Royal Mail price increase postpone

Royal Mail today advised customers that the postal price increase proposed from April 17 will be postponed because of a decision by the regulator, Postcomm, to extend the consultation period for price control. Postcomm has delayed the deadline for the consultation period to March 21, following representations from the consumer body Postwatch. Royal Mail had previously announced April 17 as the proposed date for its increases, subject to agreement with the regulator on the price control package, but there will now be no change to prices of any Royal Mail services on that date.
