We at Sagawa Express Co., Ltd. will develop and introduce a new service called “Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit” with cooperation from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. This is the industry’s first attempt to contribute to the target of a 6% greenhouse gas emissions reduction that the Japanese government is required to achieve under the Kyoto Protocol, by taking advantage of door-to-door delivery services that have increasingly penetrated into the everyday life of the general public.
The Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit is a service that enables voluntary donation of a carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions credit to the Japanese government by equally sharing part of the cost for purchasing the CO2 emissions credit between Sagawa Express and consumers who use our parcel delivery services when purchasing goods from mail-order businesses with whom we are in partnership.
Furthermore, Sagawa Express will launch a campaign to help stop global warming on April 1, 2008 for our individual customers who wish to contribute to the government’s 6% greenhouse gas reduction when using our parcel delivery service, in which a credit of emissions equivalent to that necessary for transporting each package will be donated automatically by ordering the collection and delivery of a package through our website.
Sagawa Express will offer the Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit service by purchasing a CO2 emissions credit (10,000 tons from a wind power project in India) through Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation under a greenhouse gas reduction project approved by the UN.
Read MoreJapan Post Service Co., the mail, parcels and express division of the newly-formed Japan Post Group, has upgraded its profits expectations for the second half of the year ending March 2008.
But its international expansion drive is facing criticism from multinational competitors. Japan Post now expects to increase H2 net profits by 8pct. This is 79.2 billion yen, which is 30.2 billion more than it forecast earlier this year, the Nikkei Weekly newspaper reported. The improvement is due to a smaller-than-expected contraction in mail volume and a reduced tax burden. Its revenues are expected to slip slightly to 1.06 trillion yen.
Over the last year, Japan Post has embarked on an expansion of its parcel and express activities. In October, it announced it would merge its domestic parcel service with that of Nippon Express in October 2008 to form a major competitor to the two market leaders, Yamato Transport and Sagawa Express. It has launched a cargo airline in cooperation with ANA, and sealed an international cooperation partnership with China Post.
But the Nikkei Weekly recently reported that foreign courier companies have complained about preferential treatment for Japan Post‘s EMS service. They claim it is unfair for the new Japan Post to enjoy the benefits of faster customs clearance and other preferential public sector treatment for its lower-priced EMS service which is increasingly competing with their express services that operate on a fully commercial basis.

The Kobe municipal government, together with a private company, co-developed a device to purify digestion gas from sewage treatment, using a high-pressure water absorption method, and to use resulting “bio-natural gas” with a methane level of over 98 pct. The municipal government has been conducting demonstration experiments since 2006, with such public vehicles as city buses and garbage trucks.
In May 2003, Sagawa Express became the first Japanese company– and the world’s only logistics company– to join the Climate Savers Programme, a global warming prevention program run by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Under this program, the company aims at reducing total CO2 emissions from our business activities at a rate of 6 pct by year 2012, in comparison with the base year of 2002.
As a means of achieving this goal, the company has established a plan to introduce a cumulative total of 7,000 natural gas vehicles by the year 2012; so far we have introduced 3,394 natural gas vehicles– the most such vehicles owned by one Japanese company– and have installed a total of 7 in-house natural gas stations.
