French postal and telecom staff to join strike

French postal and telecoms unions said on Sunday they would join a planned public sector protest on Tuesday as a transport strike headed into a fifth day amid a warning the action could start to hit factory output.
The railway unions, who are protesting at planned pension reforms, are due to announce their next steps late on Sunday.
Despite a tentative offer of talks from SNCF and the government, the rail strike is expected to continue until Tuesday, when civil servants and teachers are due to march in cities across the country in their own protest over pay and conditions.
The CFTC union representing staff at La Poste and France Telecom said on Sunday it would join Tuesday’s day of action, as has one union at airline Air France.
An opinion poll for Le Parisien newspaper on Sunday found most French people believe President Nicolas Sarkozy was best placed to tackle the strike, but the majority was slim.

Another poll for Journal du Dimanche found political support for the president down to 55 percent, a drop of four points in the month and his lowest score since being elected in May.

Union leaders are in a dilemma too, because their members have so far signalled little willingness to negotiate.

The rail unions oppose plans to scrap special pension privileges that allow some 500,000 public sector workers to retire on full pensions after paying contributions for only 37-1/2 years, instead of 40 years for other workers.

French La Poste and SNCF to set up 50/50 Joint Venture

French national post office La Poste and French national railway company SNCF will set up a 50/50 joint venture company to transport postal freight in Europe on high-speed trains, it was reported on November 20, 2006.
No financial details were disclosed.
The joint venture is expected to be operational at the end of 2008, the two companies said. The deal will enable La Poste to boost the development of its mail quality project, launched in 2004. It represents a total investment of 3.4 bln euro (USD 4.4 bln) until 2010 and aims at improving the speed of mail delivery.
Currently the postal freight uses three high-speed trains, covering eight delivery points between the logisitcs platforms in Paris, Macon and Cavaillon.
The two companies also said that they were studying a project for a high-speed train hub from the Paris airport Roissy Charles De Gaulle 2 (Roissy CDG2) which would make it possible to connect Strasbourg, Dijon, Rennes, Lyon, Bordeaux via Poitiers and Lille.

SNCF sheds parcel arm

SNCF is poised to announce that it is relinquishing control of loss-making parcel delivery arm Sernam through a managment buy-out. The French state rail operator had invited offers for the company, through a European tender issued last autumn. However, of the 20 to 30 firms that made initial enquiries, none confirmed an interest in acquiring the company, which made a loss of EUR40m in 2003.

French parcel service on block

The French state railway company, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français, said Wednesday, Nov. 24, it was inviting bids from logistics operators for wholly owned parcel delivery service Sernam SA. The Paris-based train operator said its 44%-owned logistics company, Géodis SA, intended to bid, and that accordingly, Géodis executive chairman Pierre Blayau was being suspended from the SNCF board. The auction is the latest step in the consolidation of European logistics businesses. The seller would not say which investment bank is organizing the auction. SNCF was emphatic that it aimed to find an industrial buyer rather than a private equity firm to acquire Sernam.

French look into rail link

A feasibility study into a high speed rail freight link between Paris CDG and Liege airports will be completed within the next two months.
Liege airport’s general manager, Luc Partoune, said one TGV Cargo train carrying mail, express and small parcels could cover the distance in 2 1/2 hours and offer capacity equivalent to a B747 freighter.
No date has been set for the launch of the TGV Cargo, a crucial issue being what timetabling provision SNCF and SNCB could offer the service.
This was one of the main sticking points in an aborted attempt by DHL to set up a high-speed rail link between Paris and Brussels over a decade ago
