Spain Tir To Invest 26 Mln Euro in Madrid, Valencia in 2003

Spanish freight forwarding and logistics group Spain Tir will invest 26 mln euro ($30.4 mln) in opening logistics centres in Madrid and Valencia by the end of 2003, Spain Tir president, Lluis Gay, said on May 20, 2003.

The company will choose one out of two logistics centres, which are currently being built in Madrid. It will operate the centre that will be completed first and will invest 21 mln euro ($24.6 mln) in the centre, Spain Tir added.

No one-stop shop for us: express is our niche, pledges GeoPost

Claude Béglé, CEO northern Europe for GeoPost, bucked the popular trend towards the logistics one-stop shop earlier this month by calling for more focus on the express industry. By working in a niche market, GeoPost was able to get business from logistics operators anyway, he said. “They come to us, but if we were in competition they would not. We want to concentrate on two services – parcels and international express.” International traffic contributed 8% to revenues last year and GeoPost is projecting a 10% increase this year.

Swiss Post arrives at the doorstep of Spain

Swiss Post, the Swiss national postal operator, is to set up operations in Spain with the eventual aim of making the country its springboard into Latin America. The Swiss company, which is already present in the UK, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, the US and Italy, plans to use the franchise model to grow in the country. With this in mind, it has already signed a deal with ABC Mail for this company to become the master franchise of operations in Spain.

Spanish MRW Opens 3.0 Mln Euro Logistics Centre in Lisbon

Spanish express courier MRW opened a 3.0 mln euro ($3.45 mln) logistics centre in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, on May 12, 2003.

The logistics centre covers a 6,000 sq m area. It is equipped with latest technology, which represents a significant value added, MRW’s general director for Portugal, Pedro Mega, said. MRW posted a 10.25 pct year-on-year increase in turnover in Portugal for 2002.
