TNT plans new Penang-Singapore service

TNT Express Worldwide plans to launch a new direct, next-day delivery service between Penang and Singapore on the Asia Road Network in the next few months.

Asia Road Network is TNT’s door-to-door delivery service, which uses an integrated road network linking Kuala Lumpur to Singapore and Bangkok and more recently, Vietnam.

The new service is expected to offer customers up to 40 per cent cost-savings compared to air freight and a 30 per cent reduction in transit time compared to the earlier schedule.

TNT is targeting high technology manufacturing companies in Penang as its would-be customers.

TNT Malaysia managing director Gerry Power said he expects the new Penang-Singapore direct service to contribute a further 30 per cent growth in volumes to the Asia Road Network. He was speaking at the launching ceremony of the company’s new Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) facility.

The new 14,500 sq ft facility is three times the size of its previous facility in KLIA and is equipped with the latest technology in supply chain management.

Meanwhile, Gerry also said that TNT has plans to extend the Asia Road Network to China as early as December 2007.

New TNT service taps demand for speedier express service

Called the Emergency Express service, the premier delivery service literally ensures that a customer’s urgent overseas shipments get out on the first available flight and is timed around a customer’s schedule with 24X7 immediate response and pick up.

TNT’s latest innovation taps on the growing demand for even speedier express services as there is a strong need to maintain shorter business cycles and low downtimes to avoid holding inventory costs and obsolete products.

This is particularly the case among high tech and aviation industries where managing business continuity for enterprise customers is vital. The perishable nature of some specimens within the life science industry also requires time critical services.

TNT has put in place a dedicated Emergency Express team in Asia who are on standby 24 hours, seven days a week, to meet the critical on-time pick-up and delivery of urgent shipments.

Instead of using fixed express networks, TNT provides a customised routing system to select the first available flight out for immediate deliveries of urgent shipments. As a result, consignments on the Emergency Express service can reach any major city in South East Asia as fast as between six and 16 hours.

Currently available in all major cities across seven countries in Asia – namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan – TNT has plans to expand the service to include Korea, Taiwan and China before the end of this year.

Thailand Post to expand types of services

Thailand Post will soon be more than just a post office. It will be offering a range of one-stop services for business and individual customers, The Nation reports.

Woodtipong Moleechad, chief operations officer for the company, said the agency would utilise new information technology to upgrade its “back-end” infrastructure in ways that will improve existing services and provide new ones.

It will also invest aboutd Bt500 million to implement “enterprise resource planning” to increase productivity.

“Customers in the near future will be able to pay for almost any business transaction at the post office, which has 1,178 branches nationwide,” said Woodtipong.

The firm is negotiating with banks to offer business transactions at post office counters, where customers will also be able to deposit and withdraw money. Kiosks will be installed to provide existing and new services.

“The new services will make life comfortable for customers. They will no longer need to go to a bank. They will just go to the post office branch near their home. They can do any transaction without transport,” said Woodtipong.

The firm will provide a “warehouse management system” as a new service for large organisations, using RFID (radio frequency identification) technology.

He said the new system would help staff reduce the time customers’ products are in storage before being sent to the destination, as the RFID readers will enhance efficiency.

The RFID tag will record information such as who owns the products, the date, time and destinations and how many product items there are.
