Post de-regulation offers reseller opportunities

Deregulation of the postal market will see new and traditional players alike scrabbling to implement mobile devices to survive, according to market watchers at Zebra Technologies.

The loss of the Royal Mail‚s monopoly has resulted in a plethora of delivery companies and courier services entering the industry, fighting to stay ahead of the game in a newly-competitive environment. Zebra is predicting that new entrants to the industry will fail in this market within twelve months if they are not properly equipped, due to the new levels of competition.

In the ‘War of the postie’ it is technology that will help new market players to stay competitive – mobile devices will make or break processes including delivery of registered mail, and collecting returned goods,” said Clive Fearn, vertical marketing manager at Zebra. “It represents a big opportunity for businesses to provide tailored systems to all the big players in Europe. There‚s so much pressure to stay ahead of competitors, it is essential companies are properly equipped to work efficiently, and offer as many services as possible.”

In the last twelve months, Zebra has supplied printers to leading postal operators such as Polish, Portuguese and Hellenic post. The company also works with businesses such as TNT and DHL, and with major postal and private operators across EMEA on projects including the mobile post and electronic stamps.

TNT appoints GM to helm Asia Road Network expansion

TNT has appointed David Stenberg as general manager of its Asia Road Network.
He will be responsible for the growth and expansion of the road network — which currently spans Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand — to Indochina and China this year.

Prior to this appointment, Stenberg was the country operations manager for TNT in Indonesia. He has also held various positions with TNT in five markets where he was responsible for operations and special services.

The road network expansion marks TNT’s strategic intent to expand its presence in Asia, particularly in key emerging markets in the region.

“Since its launch in December 2005, TNT has experienced a steady double-digit growth of the Asia Road Network. The demand for the road service has been largely contributed by small- and medium-sized enterprises that look for alternative transportation solutions to suit their business needs,” Stenberg said in a statement.

As part of the expansion plans, Stenberg will also focus on developing related bespoke services to cater to the diverse needs of the company’s growing customer base across the region.

In a separate statement, TNT said it has won the “Best Road Haulier Asia” award for the third time running at the recent Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards (AFSCA).

TNT faces uncertainty as liberalisation vote is delayed again

TNT NV is facing continued uncertainty regarding domestic operations after a parliamentary vote on a liberalisation law that would open the market to more competition was again delayed yesterday, analysts said.

The law, meant to break the once state-owned TNT’s monopoly on letters weighing up to 50 grams, is meant to take effect from January 1.

It will allow competitors like Sandd and Deutsche Post’s Selekt Mail to expand their market share in the Netherlands and increase domestic competition.

But the legislation has proven politically divisive and the vote, already pushed back from Tuesday to Thursday, has now been postponed for three weeks.

A spokesman at the Ministry of Economic Affairs said the vote was delayed so that the deputy minister in charge of liberalisation can study a series of last-minute changes suggested by MPs.

Suggested amendments include stamp price regulation without the established minimum price the government had suggested in lieu of a margin cap on aspects of the market in which TNT is unlikely to face competition.

Other suggested amendments involve the requirement that TNT provide downstream access to some of its network and a clause forcing competitors to pay their employees according to a general workers’ agreement instead of the per-delivery rates they pay now.
The last demand has been backed by TNT Post and unions representing its workers.
