Bahrain joins GCC study on pan-Gulf postal firm

Bahrain has joined other GCC states in studying the establishment of a pan-Gulf mail transportation company. The company is aimed at streamlining and speeding up mail transportation within the Gulf region.

A preliminary meeting to discuss the project was held in Dubai.

The Bahrain Post was represented by chief of international postal relations Faisal Al Dallal.

The project is in its initial stages and the authorities are currently carrying out a feasibility study, Mr Al Dallal told the GDN.

“This was the second meeting of a special committee of representatives from GCC postal administrations,” he revealed.

“The committee agreed on the framework of the financial and operations model for the proposed company.”

Committee members presented information gathered from several GCC states on the status of transportation of postal mails and couriers, said Mr Al Dallal.

“The proposed company may have to compete with private courier companies,” he noted.

“Being a government organization, it may compete in quality by providing the most cost-effective service.

“Initially, it may launch services within the Gulf, but it would be eventually extended to international destinations.”

Another meeting will be held after four weeks, probably at the GCC Secretariat in Riyadh.

This meeting is expected to be attended by postal directors from all the six GCC states.

A representative from the GCC Secretariat also attended the Dubai meeting.

Pan-GCC postal service planned

Another meeting to discuss the new postal service is scheduled to take place in November. A pan-GCC mail transportation company is likely to be set up to carry postal mail and courier parcels across the region, the UAE’s postal services company said.

The company, which was first proposed at a meeting of GCC postal officials last May, would facilitate package delivery among the different postal systems of the six GCC member states.

“GCC postal managements drew closer to establishing a pan-GCC mail transportation company following a second meeting of a special committee of representatives from GCC postal administrations,” a statement by Emirates Post said on Monday, quoted Gulf News.
The committee agreed on the framework and the financial and operational model for the proposed company at a workshop hosted by Emirates Post in Dubai on Monday, the statement added.

“The meeting helped tie loose ends and move ahead for implementing the ambitious new project that will streamline and speed up mail transportation within the region, as per the decision of GCC postal administrations,” said Abdullah Al Daboos, director-general of Emirates Post.

DHL’s drive towards clean-fuel vehicles hits a block

Early this year, DHL announced that it would add natural gas (NG)-powered vans to its UAE express delivery fleet, in the hope that this would lead the country’s efforts at promoting alternative fuel vehicles.

“With more roads and bridges being introduced into the country’s transportation network, we believe that the government must and will take steps to increase the supply of alternative fuels”, said Geoff Walsh, operations manger – UAE, DHL.

DHL is hoping to switch 50 per cent of its vehicles to natural gas by 2010. The two vehicles it currently has were converted from regular petrol-fueled vans into NG ones by Al Naboodah Automobiles.

Petrol and diesel-powered vehicles account for 80 per cent of all the environmental pollution in the UAE, a recent study by the Roads and Transport Authority said. As the emirate steps up its drive to promote environment-friendly practices, experts estimate that natural gas will account for 20 per cent of all fuel consumed by road vehicles by 2012.
Walsh said that despite the lack of filling stations, DHL was doing other things to improve its environment credentials. “These include using smaller-sized engines for our vehicles; optimising delivery routes and operating freight consolidation centers which reduce both the number of vehicles and trips needed to deliver packages,” pointed out Walsh.

“In fact, with all these efforts, between 2004 and 2007, DHL reduced fuel consumption by 19 per cent globally,” he added.
