Seabourne purchase fills network gap

Seaboure Group has acquired Scottish courier and transport operator World Xpress Systmes (WX) for an undisclosed sum. The group, which also owns Seabourne Express courier, sees the move as a chance to strategically develop its presence in the Scottish market. Don Hays, Seabournes MD said ‘Acquiring World Xpress fills a major gap in our own UK network, perfectly complementing our own long-established presence in Aberdeen.‘

Deutscher PaketDienst revises turnover forecast for 2002

Deutscher Paketdienst (DPD), the German parcel delivery service provider, a subsidiary of the French postal service La Poste, has revised its turnover forecast downwards for 2002. Earlier this year, it predicted a double-figure growth rate compared with around 1.6bn euros shown in 2001. The delivery volume, which was originally expected to rise by 8 per cent, is now expected to increase by 4 per cent.

The Economist had shown the way. With a combination of marketing flair and editorial élan, it had quintupled its North American US circulation to about 275,000 copies a week since the early ‘80s. Funny spelling and a London HQ did not, it seemed, spell death to a publisher in the American market.

National postal strike threat moves closer

Dates have been set for a vote by postal workers whether take strike action for the first time in 30 years.
The Communication Workers Union’s 180,00 members will start voting on August 27, with the result due on September 12.
The union claims the employment conditions of 7,000 cleaners and engineers due to transfer from Consignia to a joint venture with Balfour Beatty will worsen.
