International win for Tibbett

Tibbett & Britten has won a multi-million pound contract to provide 4PL services across western and central Europe to Levi Strauss Europe, Middle East and Africa. Tibbett will co-ordinate and manage all Levi Strauss & Co’s transport from factories to distribution centres, and between manufacturing plants and finishing centres throughout Europe. It will transport raw materials into Levi owned and operated factories and contributor’s factories, and deliver finished products to Levi European regional distribution centres.

Price of stamps must rise, says postal chief

The chairman of postal group Consignia today announced he is seeking an urgent rise in the price of first and second class stamps.
Allan Leighton told BBC Radio 4 that he has applied for an increase of a penny – taking first class stamps to 28p and second class to 20p.
“I happen to think that 27p for a first class stamp is probably one of the best value items that anybody can purchase any day of their lives,” he said.
“And do I still believe that is the case at 28p? Yes I do and therefore that is why I think we can put the price increase through.”
Last month Consignia warned the price of a stamp could rise by up to 3p a year if plans to open the service to competition go ahead.

Consignia fails to sway watchdog

Consignia, the loss-making Post Office group, is likely to be dealt a further blow this week when industry regulators meet to finalise plans to open the postal market to competition. Despite pressure from Consignia directors and some MPs to water down their liberalisation proposals, postal services commissioners are expected to press ahead with plans for a three-stage relaxation of the pounds 5bn market.
Consignia, which loses pounds 1.5m a day, has warned that plans outlined by the regulator, Postcomm, three months ago could wipe pounds 250m off its annual operating profits.

Ministers back call for stamp price rise

The price of postage stamps looks set to rise by a penny after ministers privately backed Consignia’s requests for an increase.
The company has asked for the increase as soon as possible, on the price of first and second class stamps. Stamp prices in Britain are among the lowest in Europe and Consignia believes the rise would net it Pounds 170m a year.
Stamp prices are frozen until 2003, although PostComm, the regulator, said a rise could happen earlier if “Consignia gives good enough reasons”.

Lynx/USPS tie-up gets off to a great start

Lynx Express is sending 1,000 packages a week to US homes and businesses through its new partnership with the US Postal Service (USPS).
Chief executive David Burtenshaw said he believed Lynx could attract 5% of the Europe/US market, which he estimated at £1bn ( t1.6bn), inside two years.
The four to five-day US Priority Package service is claimed to provide a “closed loop” similar to the integrators, but at around 60% of their overnight rates, said Burtenshaw.
