Romanian Competition Council approves acquisition of Curiero

Romania’s Competition Council gave RTC Holding, one of the largest distribution and retail groups in Romania, the green light to take over Romanian major courier company Curiero and its subsidiaries Curiero Express and Curiero Spedition, according to Mediafax News Brief Service.

The Council confirmed that the transaction does not breach competition rules. RTC Holding will operate the parcel and freight transport services of Curiero through its existing subsidiary TCE Logistica, another Romanian major courier operator.

Two months ago, TCE and Curiero announced plans to merge their businesses in order to strengthen their competitive position targeting combined revenues of EUR 30 million this year. TCE, the smaller of the two companies, yet financially a stronger one, recorded revenues of EUR 11 million last year while Couriero had revenues of EUR 14 million.

There have been several major transactions in the Romanian CEP market this year, including DHL’s acquisition of Cargus, GeoPost’s purchase of a 80 pct stake in Pegasus and the UPS buyout of local partner TCS. The Romanian courier services market is estimated at EUR 200 million.

UPS freight improves transit times to draw major markets closer

UPS Freight announced improved transit times on more than 1,200 traffic lanes originating in the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. This marks the second time in just four months that the heavy freight division of UPS has enhanced its network.

New two-day lanes now in effect include Chicago to Dallas, Boston to St. Louis and Philadelphia to Miami. The enhancements also expand the next-day footprint of UPS Freight. Shipments moving from Cincinnati to Memphis and Columbus, Ohio, to Charlotte, N.C., now will deliver overnight.

Other originating major markets with reduced transit times include Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, New York City and Newark, N.J. The faster transit times will bring cities as far as southern California, Arizona and Utah to within two and three days of these originating cities.

Earlier this year, UPS Freight announced new on-time performance guarantees. Those guarantees will be extended to the enhanced transit times announced today at no additional cost.

In May, UPS Freight announced it had improved transit times on nearly 1,000 traffic lanes originating in metropolitan areas in the Southwest and Southeast to points across the United States.

TNT hits highest in six months after UPS bid report

TNT NV rose to the highest in almost six months in Amsterdam on a report that United Parcel Service Inc. may bid for the Dutch company as soon as this weekend.

Hoofddorp, Netherlands-based TNT gained 1.70 euros, or 6.9 percent, to 26.45 euros, the highest since Feb. 28. That values the company at 9.7 billion euros (USD 14.4 billion).

UPS and TNT may meet to work out a deal over the weekend, with the U.S. company offering 34 euros to 38 euros a share, U.K. newspaper the Times reported, without citing anyone. TNT surged 26 percent on July 14, its biggest jump since first selling shares to the public in 1998, after the Financial Times reported that FedEx Corp., the second-biggest U.S. package- shipping company, was in talks to buy its Dutch rival.

“If UPS started calculating and put together a team when FedEx rumors emerged in July, they should be ready to make a bid by now,” said Thijs Berkelder, an analyst at Petercam in Amsterdam, in a telephone interview. He said TNT may be worth about 40 euros a share in a takeover bid.

TNT declined to comment on “rumors and speculation,” spokesman Cyrille Gibot said today by telephone.

“UPS will never comment on rumors or speculation about mergers and acquisitions,” said Norman Black, a spokesman for the Atlanta-based company.

Deutsche Post may pay further three-digit mln dollar sum in U.S. revamp

Deutsche Post AG. may pay an additional three-digit million dollar sum in the announced restructuring of the company’s U.S. DHL business, Financial Times Deutschland reported, citing company sources.

The amount comes on top of the previously announced costs of USD 2 billion for the turnaround programme at the struggling unit, it added.

In May, the company said the loss-making U.S. operations of its DHL express unit will tie up in domestic and international airfreight shipments with United Parcel Service Inc. and will launch a cost-cutting programme.

The plans also involve the closure of a logistics hub at Wilmington, Ohio, while threatening up to 8,000 jobs at airline ABX.

Last week, Deutsche Post Chief Executive Frank Appel defended planned job cuts at the company’s U.S. DHL business, insisting in response to criticism voiced by U.S. politicians that the reductions are needed to turn the division around.

UPS Airlines opens anchorage training facility

UPS officially opened its newest flight training facility, a 27,000-square-foot center here that will reduce the time spent away from home for training by Anchorage-based pilots.

Housing two flight simulators, classrooms and offices, the facility is the second such pilot training center in the UPS network and will be in operation approximately 20 hours each day. Established to support all phases of flight training, the new facility will make it unnecessary for Anchorage-based pilots to fly to Louisville for training. The UPS Airlines and its main global Worldport hub are located in Louisville.

In December 2006, UPS made Anchorage the home of a new pilot domicile. Currently, 402 crewmembers are based here and that number is expected to increase to 438 by year’s end. Thirty-five employees, including training instructors, simulator technicians and administrative staff, are based at the new training facility.

The Anchorage Flight Training Facility was built in a converted hangar located at the south end of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. It houses UPS’s only 747-400 flight simulator along with its second MD-11 simulator. Both of those aircraft are used to provide the long-range international lift necessary for UPS to maintain its global reach.
