UPS Canada helps expand largest global Green Fleet

PS Canada announced it will be rolling out 139 additional cleaner-burning, propane delivery trucks. The majority of these vehicles will be deployed in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta and the rest distributed between British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The propane vehicles are joining roughly 600 propane trucks already operating in Canada. The addition of these vehicles means more than a third of UPS Canada’s 2,000 package delivery vehicles will run on low-carbon fuel.

The 139 new propane trucks are expected to reduce UPS’s carbon dioxide emissions by a total of 254 metric tonnes per year, the equivalent weight of 80 UPS trucks. This would be a 35 per cent improvement compared to conventional gas engines. Additionally, particulate matter emitted from vehicles will be virtually eliminated.

The newly added propane-powered vehicles feature the latest technology in clean-burning propane engines. Propane vehicles emit about one-third fewer reactive organic gases than gasoline-fuelled vehicles. Nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide emissions are 20 per cent and 60 per cent less, respectively, than conventional vehicles.

UPS’s global alternative-fuel fleet now stands at 1,629 vehicles – the largest such private fleet in the transportation industry – and includes compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, propane and electric and hybrid electric vehicles. UPS is also working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on a hydraulic hybrid delivery vehicle.

China Postal Airlines launches flights between Yantai, Seoul

Mail and cargo flights between the Chinese coastal city of Yantai, Shandong Province, and Seoul, Republic of Korea, went into operation, shortening delivery times between the two cities by at least 12 hours.

A Boeing 737 aircraft of China Postal Airlines, specializing in express mail services (EMS) and cargo transport, took off from Yantai International Airport at 11 a.m. and landed in Seoul 70 minutes later, airline sources said.

It is the first cargo flight service between South Korea and Shandong, its largest investment destination in China. South Korea has invested about 20 billion U.S. dollars in the eastern province through 2007, accounting for 27 percent of its China investment.

The new route boosts economic exchange between Shandong and South Korea and gives China Postal a better footing in the international market, according to the China Postal Airlines source.

Currently, there are 18,000 companies that have been directly invested by South Korean businesses in Shandong, half of the total in China.

China Postal Airlines will fly from Yantai to Seoul five times weekly, according to company sources. Express mail from the province can arrive at Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon in South Korea the next day and in other cities a day after that.

Shanghai-based China Postal Airlines, a 51/49 percent joint venture between China’s State Post Bureau and China Southern Airlines, boasts a fleet of 13 aircraft and operates 30 flights to a dozen domestic cities. The company’s delivery network covers more than 300 Chinese cities.

In line with its commitments to the World Trade Organization, China has fully opened its express delivery market. International delivery companies such as DHL, TNT and UPS are now competing in China.

UPS accelerates ground shipments for customers in eight states

UPS announced another step in its continuing quest to reduce ground transit times for customers, accelerating package movements between more than 12 million ZIP code pairings by one day or more. The improvements include lanes originating in eight key states and more than 70 markets and will speed up more than 75,000 packages nationwide every day.

This year’s initiative is improving service for almost half-a-million customers nationwide without changing their pick-up and delivery times. The new enhancements follow transit time improvements in 2006 that helped more than 1.2 million customers in 11 metropolitan areas.

The faster deliveries will benefit daily package pick-up customers as well as general consumers shipping via UPS.com or The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. For example, shipments between Denver and Philadelphia now are guaranteed to arrive in three business days instead of five. Shipments between Pittsburgh and Dallas now are guaranteed to arrive in two business days instead of four, while ground shipments between Hartford and Chicago now will take two business days instead of three.

The eight origin areas with the latest improvements include Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Montana, North Dakota, western Nebraska and Wyoming. Customers can view the improved transit times at ups.com/fast and print both outbound maps as well as inbound time-in-transit maps.

IPC’s The Future of Mail by Air is featured at IATA World Cargo Symposium in Rome

If you want to learn more about the IPC initiative on The Future of Mail by Air and how posts and carriers are working together towards paper free transport of mail by air, piece ID level tracking, booking and electronic accounting of mail, the IATA World Cargo Symposium is the place to be.

The World Cargo Symposium will be held March 3-6 in Rome. The ”Airmail Management” event at the next IATA World Cargo Symposium will focus on the challenges for posts and airlines to meet growing customer demands and explore the opportunities to effectively manage the increasing volumes of mail.

Over 800 cargo professionals from around the world participated in the first International Air Transport Association (IATA) World Cargo Symposium, which took place last year in Mexico City. This one-week global mega-conference featured 140 speakers, 28 exhibitors and 12 sponsors in one single gathering.
IPC will take the lead in addressing some misperceptions when it comes to mail.

Mail is perceived by some to be a traditional letter product, difficult to manage and insignificant in terms of volumes. Perceptions are that multi-media and internet alternatives are replacing mail; when in fact, multi-media and internet have become drivers of mail growth. Direct mail advertising is growing and driving the expansion of the packages and parcels market. Even though merchandise is being purchased via the internet, the packages and small parcels purchased are delivered by traditional mail channels, increasing the need for capacity on the airlines.

IPC, as an operator’s association representing 24 of the world’s leading posts and 140 participating posts, wants to attract attention to the expanding business of this mail category and the growing business opportunities mail transport provides to the airlines.

If you are interested in this topic, you may follow the link below to register for the IATA World Cargo Symposium online. Make sure you register for the MAIL TRACK event. You will meet the mail industry leaders and airlines that are working to provide visibility to meet increasing customer demands and working together towards a reliable and sustainable, paper free mail transport by air!
