Special Delivery: Bringing SMBs into the Global Shipping Network

“Each carrier has tools to make international shipping easier. DHL calls its ‘Trade Automation Services.’ UPS’ international tool is named ‘TradeAbility.’ FedEx has its Trade Network. You will have to register in order to access these tools, and some carriers charge a transaction fee for providing a service,” Mark Taylor, chief logistics officer at RedRoller.com told the E-Commerce Times.

The parcel carriers have been a huge factor driving the globalization of commerce, Taylor agreed.

“First, they see this as a high priority in their own growth and success,” he continued. “We can see this from some public statements from their CEOs. Mike Eskew, chairman and chief executive officer of United Parcel Service informs us, ‘Most of our 8 million daily customers at UPS are small businesses.

It turns out that small businesses make up 97 percent of all exporters and nearly 40 percent of exports’ total value, statistics pointed out by FedEx CEO Fred Smith, said Taylor.

“Second, international shipping is where their bread is buttered. Donald Broughton, an analyst who follows both UPS and FedEx for A.G. Edwards & Sons in St. Louis, tells us ‘Direct international is 23 percent of revenue for FedEx, but it’s the fastest growing part of their business, and it’s almost 20 percent for UPS. FedEx is the largest air freight carrier in Asia and UPS is neck-and-neck with DHL in Europe,'” he said.

UPS provides package delivery services to 21 of the top 25 e-tailers in the U.S. as ranked by Internet Retailer magazine, according to Donna Barrett, the company’s technology public relations manager. Tracking requests on UPS.com along average 15 million a day.

There have been more than 25,000 distinct integrations within the last 18 months of UPS Online Tools, which retailers can integrate into their Web sites, Barrett told the E-Commerce Times. These have enabled more than 748,000 individual users to access tracking, time-in-transit, rating and shipping information.

Shanghai airports report double-digit rise in passenger handling business

Shanghai’s two airports handled a record 51.57 million passengers last year, an 11.8 percent increase over 2006.

The Pudong International and Hongqiao airports offered services to 440,809 planes in total in 2007, up 7.61 percent. Pudong handled 58 percent, or 253,671 takeoffs and landings, while Hongqiao accommodated 42 percent, or 187,138 takeoffs and landings, according to a Shanghai Airport Authority source.

Pudong was the only airport in the world to provide a dual presence for courier companies UPS and DHL. It ranked fifth globally for cargo and mail handling volume in the first three quarters of 2007, said the source.

Currently, 71 domestic and overseas air companies have been operating regular air routes to Shanghai, linking the Chinese financial and commercial hub with 179 cities worldwide.

Top China logistics firm eyes USD 2 bln IPO

China Post Logistics plans to raise over USD 2 billion in a Hong Kong and Shanghai stock market listing in 2008, sources said, amid mounting foreign competition in the booming sector.
The company, run by the state operator of the country’s huge postal system, is expected to raise at least USD 2 billion in total on both markets, though it was too early to tell how much it could rake in eventually, one of the sources familiar with the deal told Reuters.
“We do have a listing plan, but now we don’t have any timetable, maybe next year or later,” a China Post Logistics spokesman said. He declined further comment.
The state-owned logistics firm — established in 2003 with a 370 million yuan (USD 50 million) capital base — is set to balloon in size. Its parent has embarked on a plan to merge the firm with its own nationwide express mail service.
The spokesman said any listing timetable should depend on the progress of the merger, which is expected to finish in 2008.
Robust economic growth and surging foreign trade is propping up growth in China’s sprawling transportation and logistics industry.
The country’s logistics sector chalked up turnover of 53.7 trillion yuan in the first three quarters of 2007, up 25.5 percent, according to the China Logistics Information Centre.

UPS Contract with Teamsters Ratified

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters today notified UPS that a new contract covering approximately 240,000 UPS employees has been certified approved and ratified.

The ratification came as five local supplemental or rider agreements received approval in a second round of employee voting. Last month, the UPS National Master Agreement was approved by 65 pct of the voting employees.

The master contract was negotiated nearly a year in advance of the current contract’s expiration on July 31, 2008, and will extend contract coverage to July 31, 2013.

“We are excited to learn that everything now is in place to implement our agreement with the Teamsters,” said Mike Eskew, UPS’s chairman and CEO. “This agreement helps to ensure that UPS is well positioned for success in the coming years.”

The new contract includes wage increases as well as significant contributions to healthcare and pension plans to help strengthen these benefits for employees. The agreement allows UPS to withdraw employees from the Central States multi-employer pension plan and to establish a jointly trusteed, single-employer plan for this group. UPS will make a pre-tax USD 6.1 billion payment to the Central States plan on Dec. 26, 2007, in connection with its withdrawal.
