UPS's Brown Sleighs Gear Up For Busiest Week

UPS today begins its busiest week of the year for package deliveries, with a crescendo expected on Wednesday when more than 22 million packages will be delivered on that one day worldwide.

For the Brown “sleighs” helping Santa, that’s more than 250 deliveries every second.

The nimbleness of the UPS global package delivery network enables the company to easily accommodate these annual spikes in package volume.

Other key facts that describe the enormity of the UPS holiday push:

– While Wednesday, Dec. 19, is the busiest day for deliveries of all packages, Friday, Dec. 21, is the busiest day for deliveries of UPS air express packages. UPS will deliver 5.6 million air packages on that day globally – more than two-and-a-half times the normal daily volume.
– UPS expects more than 150 million online package tracking requests during this week and nearly 32 million on Wednesday, Dec. 19, alone.
– UPS once again has become one of the holiday season’s top employers of choice, having added roughly 60,000 seasonal employees.
– UPS’s ground fleet of 94,542 package cars, vans, and tractors has expanded by approximately 7,000 vehicles.
– UPS Airlines, the ninth largest in the world, is adding 423 more flights per day during this week than an average day.

Attention procrastinators: UPS will accept Next Day Air® packages on Friday, Dec. 21, for delivery on Monday, Dec. 24, well in time for the big day.

UPS unveils strategic alliance in India

UPS Jetair Express has announced a strategic alliance with AFL “that will significantly expand accessibility to UPS services in India while providing export capabilities to AFL”.

The alliance will take effect from January 1, 2008, when all AFL WiZ Express Centres across India will promote US-based UPS’s international express delivery service to customers in that country.

Under the new set-up, UPS Jetair Express will continue to operate as an international express delivery service provider connecting India with the global marketplace, while AFL maintains its function as a domestic service provider connecting businesses across India.

The new alliance will also allow AFL to pick up international export shipments on behalf of UPS destined for the more than 200 countries and territories served by the latter. UPS access points for customers with international express delivery requirements will exponentially increase to more than 200 locations in India.

UPS will provide training to all AFL sales staff to ensure that global service standards are maintained.

Over the last 60 years, AFL claims to have pioneered and led three different segments of the logistics industry in India – air freight forwarding, international air express service and third party logistics. In 2001, it added a domestic air express service.

UPS To Relocate Europe Logistics Division To Brussels -Report

United Parcel Services Inc. (UPS) will move the headquarters for its logistics distribution division from Biel/Bienne, Switzerland to Brussels, Belgium, resulting in the transfer of 85 employees, Belgian daily L’Echo reported Monday.

The move follows the company’s decision to locate the company’s European headquarters in Brussels. The Swiss headquarters will close in May 2008.
