UPS to expand air freight network

As part of its expansion in the air freight business, UPS today announced plans to construct five regional freight hubs at airports across the country.
The regional facilities, when completed and brought on line next year, will support a main freight hub to be constructed in Louisville, Ky., home to the company’s main all-points air hub. The six facilities will form the backbone of an expansive air network for the movement of heavy freight for customers of UPS Supply Chain Solutions. The new facilities will be constructed in Ontario, Calif.; Rockford, Ill.; Dallas; Philadelphia, and Columbia, S.C. Those airports already serve as regional hubs for UPS’s separate small package network, meaning UPS jets are routinely flying in and out every day.

UPS adds slower US business mail service for lower rate

United Parcel Service business mail services unit Mail Innovations unveiled an integrated suite of mailing services that includes a new option to send non-urgent mail at a lower rate in exchange for less speedy delivery.

Customers also can choose UPS Mail Logic Saver, which delivers mail in an average of six days. Mail sent with UPS Mail Logic Saver qualifies for a lower per-piece rate.

Domestically, UPS Mail Innovations typically handles mail pieces weighing less than 1 pound, including flats, bound printed matter, including catalogs and lightweight products such as CDs or books. Internationally, UPS Mail Innovations handles mail of all weights.

Nonprofits, USPS agree on Standard Mail Rule

Nonprofit mailers are celebrating an agreement with the U.S. Postal Service regarding the interpretation of an impending rule that seeks to clarify the application of Standard mail rates in mail that includes personalisation.
Slated to take effect June 1, the rule requires that mail including personal information for any purpose other than a solicitation must be sent at the First-Class rate rather than the cheaper Standard rate. After several test rulings from the USPS, nonprofits feared that solicitations would be meant to include requests for monetary donations only.

Because the First-Class rate is three times as expensive in some cases, nonprofit mailers worried that mail including common types of personalisation for reasons other than asking for money — such as a request for volunteers — would get hit with the higher rate.
