US Postal Service plans to relaunch personalised stamp program

In a potentially huge victory for Santa Monica-based Stamps.com Inc, the US Postal Service plans to relaunch a personalised stamps program that had to be suspended last summer when images of a number of notorious figures made their way onto official US stamps. The program, run by online postage provider Stamps.com during its popular but brief run, will be put out to bid on Wednesday and can relaunch as early as next month, said Gerry McKiernan, a Postal Service spokesman. “My expectation is that (Stamps.com) is standing at the door right now because all they have to do is turn on the switch,” said McKiernan, who called Stamps.com “a fine, reputable firm.” Only a few vendors have the sophisticated technology to put a customer-supplied photo on a postage stamp, McKiernan said, adding that the program can resume in 20 days.

Teamsters target DHL

As it battles for a larger share of express shipping in the United States, DHL is getting the attention of more than just shippers and competitors. The express giant is facing an aggressive effort by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union to organize the company’s independent delivery workforce. Started in force late last summer, the union campaign has recruited about 1,500 employees at DHL’s independent cartage contractors to the union ranks, said Rebecca Hanscom, national campaign coordinator for the DHL system at the Teamsters. That is just a fraction of the 10,000 independent delivery agents at DHL, but the union is mounting a national and grassroots campaign to recruit the balance. The objective is to recruit members at the local level, forge regional agreements and eventually press for a master contract covering all DHL employees.

FedEx announces plans to add up to 75 ”clean air” hybrid trucks to fleet

FedEx Express has announced plans to add up to 75 hybrid, diesel electric trucks to its service fleet in the next 12 months, contingent upon pricing and availability. “Placing hybrid trucks in Washington D.C., and the planned increase for next year reflects the growing viability of hybrid trucks,” said John Formisano, vice president of Global Vehicles, FedEx Express. “It also shows the commitment of FedEx to pursue the use of promising technologies that both reduce fuel costs and provide more environmentally responsive vehicles for the communities in which we live and work.”
