USPS seeks comment on Transformation Plan

The US Postal Service is looking for input on its next Strategic Transformation Plan for 2006 through 2010, according to a notice published Monday in the Federal Register. The current strategic plan covers 2002-06. It was created in 2002 in response to calls from Congress and the comptroller general for a transformation plan addressing the challenges confronting the USPS. The update will extend the ongoing transformation of the postal service, the USPS said. Publication of the update is expected by Sept. 30.

DHL introduces Beijing-Hong Kong and Shanghai express connections

DHL has announced the launch of two new direct overnight express services, one between Shanghai and the United States and the other between Beijing and Hong Kong. The daily Shanghai-US flight, which will directly connect Shanghai with Anchorage in the US and then onward to DHL’s hubs in Cincinnati and Los Angeles, will be operated by Northwest Airlines, DHL said in a statement. The four times weekly Beijing-Hong Kong service will utilize a Cathay Pacific aircraft from DHL’s central Asia Hub in Hong Kong, DHL said. China is expected to overtake Japan as DHL’s top revenue contributor in the Asia-Pacific region in coming years, Jerry Hsu, DHL president for Greater China and Korea told reporters.

UPS Supports Comprehensive Postal Reform Legislation

Following passage of comprehensive postal reform legislation by the House Government Reform Committee, UPS has announced its support of H.R. 22 and committed to work toward final passage in Congress.

The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2005 mandates significant reform measures to move the Postal Service toward sound financial footing while enhancing regulatory oversight. Last year, the House Government Reform Committee’s Special Panel on Postal Reform and Oversight held numerous hearings with key stakeholders in the mailing industry to develop comprehensive postal reform legislation.

RR Donnelley to buy Britain’s Astron Group

US printing company RR Donnelley said Monday it has agreed to buy Britain’s privately owned Astron Group in a cash deal worth about USD 990 million (EUR 760 million). RR Donnelley, the largest printing company in North America, said the acquisition of Astron, a business outsourcing company that handles British passport applications, will add “slightly” to its earnings within a year of the transaction. Donnelley Chief Executive Mark A Angelson said that the purchase will almost double the Chicago-based company’s contract printing business and will increase operations in Europe and Asia.

FedEx Freight CEO: gaining market share in ‘chunks’

FedEx Corp.’s freight division continues to gain market share as more retailers and manufacturers go from talking about just-in-time shipping to actually doing it. As those manufacturers move operations offshore, FedEx will gain even more of the domestic freight market as customers turn to FedEx for help with their international supply chains, said FedEx Freight Chief Executive Doug Duncan.
“More and more companies are actually executing fast-cycle logistics,” rather than just talking about it, Duncan said in an interview with Dow Jones. “We strongly believe that we are taking market share in pretty big chunks.”
In the fiscal third quarter ended in February, FedEx Freight’s revenue rose 19% to USD 747 million, as its operating margin widened to 7.2% from 5.9% the year before.
