ABX Air to staff and operate seven new DHL regional sort centers in US

ABX Air have announced that it will be staffing and operating seven new regional sort centers for DHL. The first facility will be located in Denver, Colorado, and is scheduled to begin operating on September 10, 2004. DHL has yet to announce the location of the six other new sort centers, all of which are expected to be operational by year-end.

ABX Air will initially employ 26 people at the new DHL facility in Denver, bringing in temporary employees as needed to accommodate increases in volume during the holiday season. The facility will handle a variety of shipments, including letter and parcel items, palletized and container freight. DHL is investing USD3 million in the 74,800 square foot facility, which will operate six days a week and have a sort capacity of 4,000 letter pieces per hour/3,500 parcels per hour.

Deutsche Poste more cautious regarding performance of DHL in US

Deutsche Post, the German postal services operator, has revealed that the goal for achieving a breakeven for the US activities is dependent on certain conditions. John Fellows, Chairman and CEO of DHL Holdings Inc. explained that reaching breakeven would depend on the economic situation in the US and that achieving the planned growth rates was paramount. DHL is expecting the current financial year to end in a deficit of around 248m Euros in the US.

FedEx Freight Expands Operations in Metro Chicago and Midwest

FedEx Freight has opened new, expanded service centers in Aurora, Ill., and Fremont, Ind. The carrier has also increased its capacity at five other locations. “Ongoing investment in our infrastructure has always been a critical component of our success,” said Douglas G. Duncan, president and CEO, FedEx Freight. “Our goal is to stay ahead of the curve by anticipating customer demand for our service and proactively expanding or opening new facilities to add the necessary capacity to our network. These strategically-placed facilities allow us to more effectively handle additional freight from our customers, which has been spurred by a recovering economy and increasing implementation of fast-cycle logistics.”

USPS Income Over Budget; Standard Volume Up 5.1%

The U.S. Postal Service had net income of USD 2.79 billion, or USD 703.3 million over budget, from Oct. 1 to July 31, the agency said last week. Also, mail volume was up, and expenses are under plan. USPS fiscal and operating statements showed that revenue totaled USD 57.6 billion, 0.1 percent better than planned, but down 0.3 percent from the year-ago period. Expenses of USD 54.8 billion were 1.2 percent under the planned budget, but up 2.6 percent versus the year-ago period. Total year-to-date mail volume of 171.5 billion pieces increased 1.3 percent from a year ago. Standard and International mail grew 5.1 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively. But several classes saw declines. Periodicals and Express Mail both fell 3.3 percent; Priority Mail, 2.4 percent; First-Class, 1.7 percent; and Package Services, 0.1 percent.

USPS shortchanged by USD800 million, Potter says

Congress is shortchanging the U.S. Postal Service under planned fiscal 2005 appropriations and should restore more than USD800 million in funding, Postmaster General John Potter said Aug. 31. In a letter to Rep. Ernest Istook, R-Okla., chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury and independent agencies, Potter said programs to provide free mail for the blind and overseas voters and to secure postal facilities against future bioterror attacks are jeopardized by the lack of appropriations. The Postal Service wants nearly USD76 million to subsidize free mail services; the House spending bill would provide almost USD62 million.
