DHL’s use of Astar Air Cargo and ABX Air heading for US approval

DHL’s use of Astar Air Cargo and ABX Air to carry freight in North America appears to be headed for Department of Transportation approval, clearing the way for the European express giant to compete head-to-head with FedEx and UPS in the United States. DOT administrative Law Judge Burton Kolko’s recommended decision in the Astar citizenship case leaves little room for DOT decision makers to maneuver. To declare Miami-based Astar as non-U.S. controlled would require an unlikely complete reversal of Kolko’s recommendation and a total rejection of the judge’s reasoning.

SmartMail’s 2003 business strategy results in growth

SmartMail Services has announced the success of its aggressive growth strategy during the 2003 calendar year. SmartMail acquired two companies, expanded its processing facilities to 17 SmartCenters and broadened its suite of delivery service offerings to include Flats, Catalogs, Bound Printed Matter, Media Mail and Parcels. “The SmartMail team had an outstanding year and accomplished several milestones,” says Matt Vettel, chairman of SmartMail and partner at Great Hill Partners. “By expanding our service offering and continuing our network build out, we met our overall strategic objective of strengthening our value proposition for our customers.”

UPS Opens Supply Chain “Window” With Quantum View Manage

UPS have announced the launch of Quantum ViewSM Manage, a technology application that allows UPS small package shippers to more easily monitor package movements within their supply chains and use that information to improve service to their customers. Quantum View Manage is a Web-based application that allows shippers to view shipment information for multiple accounts without a tracking number – easily seeing when a package is processed, in transit or when it arrives – or if and why it is delayed.

Financial direct mailers prefer mail

Mail is the preferred direct marketing medium to solicit orders and generate leads for financial services firms including banks, credit card and commodities/securities companies.

According to a just-released industry-specific Direct Marketing Association response rate survey, 71.5% use the medium.

E-mail, on the other hand, was used by only 31% of the marketers polled, while telemarketing is utilized by only 21.5%. Other media such as dimensional mail, inserts, freestanding inserts and print ads were measured in the DMA survey, but didn’t produce significant returns, either in response rates or the number of marketers using the media.

USPS service posts 1st quarter income gain despite mail decline

The U.S. Postal Service posted a net income of USD1.8 billion in the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2004, nearly a half billion less compared to a similar period last year. During the same period, expenses increased only 1.7 percent, despite the rising costs of health benefits, fuel and the expanding delivery network. In a report to the Postal Service Board of Governors today, Chief Financial Officer Richard J. Strasser Jr. said revenue for Quarter I was USD18.2 billion, down USD181 million, and expenses were USD16.4 billion, an increase of USD272 million over the same period last year.
