U.S. Postmaster General seeks bailout to deal with high costs, lower revenue

Oct. 23–The U.S. Postal Service was already in financial trouble when, on the morning of Sept. 11, its board of governors met to seek a rate increase to 37 cents for first-class mail. After the decision was made, they rushed to their windows to see smoke billowing from the Pentagon. Since then, the discovery of anthrax-tainted letters has put a tremendous strain on the quasi-private company, increasing expenses while the volume of mail, particularly from lucrative direct mail, has been plummeting. Postmaster General John Potter said Monday he plans to ask Congress for a bailout to deal with the organization’s soaring costs and plummeting revenue. “Other businesses have gotten relief in the form of funding, and we certainly . . . will ask for help,” Potter said on NBC’s Today show.

Alliance between British Airways and American Airlines back on agenda. BA & KLM discussing alliance

The controversial alliance between British Airways and American Airlines is back on the agenda as the British and US governments hold talks in London today aimed at liberalising air services. BA and KLM, the Dutch flag carrier, said yesterday they were discussing ways to co-operate to cut costs and increase revenues, both with each other and with other European airlines.

Overnite buys Motor Cargo

Copyright 2001, Traffic World Magazine Union Pacific Corp.’s Overnite Transportation unit last week made a major expansion of its Western LTL regional reach with the purchase of Salt Lake City-based Motor Cargo Industries for $80 million, based on current stock valuation.

“We are very pleased to have Motor Cargo as part of our family,” Overnite Chairman, President and CEO Leo H. Suggs said. “They are a highly successful, customer-focused regional carrier well positioned to continue their record of growth in the West. This acquisition will enable Overnite to accelerate our entrance into the attractive and growing Western regional market.”

DHL pact with Unishippers is gateway to network

Of special benefit to DHL is expected to be Unishippers’ 200,000 business network, the companies said in a statement. Synergies are seen through combining of DHL’s large company customer base with Unishippers’ small to medium-sized market segment.

‘This alliance will enable Unishippers to leverage DHL’s unparalleled air express service across the globe,’ said Jeffrey Corbett president, DHL.

‘In turn, DHL will widen exposure for its suite of international services through Unishippers International franchisee network.’ The partners see particular advantages accruing to the smaller end of the market.
