US Postal Service scores big in customers’ delivery comparisons

The US Postal Service – no stranger to measuring itself for performance success and customer satisfaction – took the lead in four informal parcel delivery tests conducted by postal customers this holiday mailing season. The “New York Times,” “Grand Rapids Press” (MI), KSLTV (UT) and KTVI (MO), within days of one another, conducted mailing comparisons among the US Postal Service, DHL, FedEx and United Parcel Service, measuring delivery time, quality and cost, shipping identical items ranging from coffee mugs and holiday ornaments to pecans within each test and using comparable classes of mail.

The millions of consumers who receive packages at their homes each year may not see it, but the residential delivery process has been completely transformed over the last five years, and the USPS is at the heart of it.

US Postal Service ends fiscal year USD3 billion in the black

The US Postal Service finished its fiscal year just over USD3 billion in the black, helping the agency reduce its debt and keep a promise that postal rates won’t go up until 2006. Net income of USD3.1 billion was down from USD3.9 billion a year earlier, but was better than officials had expected thanks to cost cutting and an increase in advertising mail, according to postal chief financial officer Richard J. Strasser. Increases in first-class mail have helped cover the rising costs of inflation in the past. Now advertising mail is the growing segment, but volume can vary widely in response to business conditions and it contributes far less to the agency’s bottom line.
