Report on USPS mail scanning initiative

Doing better business was the first theme at the Unisys Air Cargo Conference this October. Hosted as usual in Nice, France, it brought together 60 senior executives from the global industry and focused on the key areas of doing better business, outsourcing, technology and alliances. Robbie Anderson, managing director Planning & Support of Continental Airlines Cargo, was the first panel speaker to address this topic. After a general overview of Continental Airlines’ route network, the fleet (including 18 B777-200s) and the company’s cargo division, he presented details of the USPS mail scanning and cargo revenue management initiatives on which his division had worked. Both initiatives had substantially improved revenues, Anderson said. “Any time we have opportunities within the cargo department to leverage margins and revenues, we get quite a bit of interest at the executive level,” Anderson said.

ABX Air awarded US Postal Service contract to operate air network during holidays

ABX Air announced today that it has been awarded a contract by the US Postal Service to manage an air network to transport mail during the busy holiday season. The network will include ABX Air aircraft as well as those of other operators. ABX Air will also provide logistics services and hub operations in support of the network. The contract calls for ABX Air to be compensated at a fixed price on a per-day basis and is expected to generate gross revenues of approximately USD5.1 million.

US Postal Service expands reach of money transfer service

Sure Money(R), the Postal Service’s international wire transfer service, also called Dinero Seguro(R), has expanded its reach to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Available to Mexico since 1996, Sure Money now provides customers with the ability to transfer money to nine additional countries. They are the Caribbean country of the Dominican Republic; and the Latin American countries of Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru. “Postal money orders have long been a favorite way for people to send money to friends and relatives internationally,” says Chief Marketing Officer Anita Bizzotto. “And Sure Money provides an electronic alternative that reduces the time it takes to receive the funds from days to minutes.”

US Postal Service looking for rate increase

The US Postal Service will seek approval for a 10 percent increase in postage rates early next year, according to a report published Wednesday. First-class stamps, which have risen 12 percent since 2001, would increase to at least 41 cents, the Wall Street Journal reported in a story on its Web site. The last price increase was in 2002. According to the report, the unusually large size of the expected rate increase stems partly from the demise of proposed legislation that would have allowed the postal service to take advantage of about USD3 billion a year in pension-fund savings resulting from a change in how it contributes to a federal retirement fund. The legislation also would have freed the service from future pension payments to employees who previously served in the military.

US Postal Service security still lacking, government report finds

Thousands of keys are missing from former employees at one postal site, and gates are unlocked at others, the government said Tuesday in a report detailing security gaps at major mail centers. A report by the US Government Accountability Office said efforts have been made to make postal facilities more secure, but security still lags at many of the nation’s 373 core mail centers. The US Postal Service agreed with the report and promised to refocus its efforts. “We still have room for improvement at many facilities,” the Postal Service’s chief operating officer, Patrick Donahoe, wrote to the GAO after receiving the agency’s report. Investigators with the GAO visited 13 core facilities and found problems ranging from open entry gates to employees not wearing badges. Core sites include processing and distribution centers, bulk mail centers and operations at airports.
