Global Mail Service Expanded

The US Postal Service is expanding its agreement with Royal Mail Group’s parcel delivery company, General Logistics System (GLS) for delivery of Global Express Mail (GEM) to Europe from 6 to 14 countries. GLS currently delivers GEM items to 6 countries: Austria, Denmark, Germany, France, Netherlands, and Sweden. The 8 additional countries to which GLS will deliver GEM items effective March 29, 2003, are Belgium, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, San Marino, Switzerland, and Vatican City. Note that San Marino and the Vatican City are being added to the countries that can be reached using GEM.

Service enhancements set for Global Express Mail delivery in Europe

Global Express Mail (GEM) customers can look for better service and more detailed and accurate tracking in eight additional European countries.

These improvements come as a result of expanded delivery of GEM — from six to 14 countries — by Royal Mail Group’s Pan-European parcel delivery company, General Logistics Systems (GLS).

According to James P. Wade, vice president, International Business, the Postal Service entered the agreement with Royal Mail to create a new model for package delivery in Europe — using a single delivery agent to improve delivery service and tracking while maintaining current rates.

U.S. Postal Service may seek rate increase 2 years early

The U.S. Postal Service may push for its next increase on postage rates as early as next month and two years sooner than scheduled, according to postal officials. The Postal Service has yet to convince Congress to pass legislation reducing its contribution to a federal-government retirement fund. The agency is burdened by USD3bn in debt, and a Congressional approval of the bill could delay the next rate increase until 2006.
