TNT opens office in Mekong Delta, Vietnam

TNT Vietrans Express Worldwide Limited Company, a joint venture between the TNT group and the Ministry of Trade, opened an office the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho.

TNT is the first company to open office in Can Tho since it became a central city. The office is expected to help promote economic development in the city and the region through its quick postal services including express distribution of letters and packages. TNT can transport 3.6 million express parcels to 222 countries a week.

Postal savings proposal to provide banking services rejected

The central bank has rejected a proposal by Postal Savings Service Co. to provide banking services, saying the current rules disallow companies in the sector to get involved in what only banks can do. In a document just sent to the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation, the parent firm of Postal Savings Service, the central bank says the corporation’s affiliate can only mobilize deposits.The company is banned from other banking services like lending, domestic and international payments, and credit card issuance and acceptance.

Vietnam provides public access to internet at Post Offices

The Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation has completed its plan to provide public access to the internet at post offices.

Over 800 offices with Internet service will be established. All first grade post offices, offices at the provincial and township levels, will be equipped with five computers each.

50% of all second grade post offices, those at the district level, will be furnished with two computers each, and 10% of third grade post offices, those at the commune and ward levels, will have one computer each. The corporation has also fixed charges of 3,000 VND/ hour for first and second grade post offices and 2,300/ hour for third grade post offices.

Vietnam Post and UPS set up joint venture

Vietnam’s largest telecom business, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT), and the United Parcel Service Inc (UPS) of the United States have signed a contract to form a joint venture.

Under the contract, the two sides will jointly deliver information, goods and funds to over 200 countries and territories worldwide covered by the UPS global service network. For the time being, Vietnam will be included in the UPS global air delivery network.

Fedex keen on Chu Lai (Vietnam) open economic zone

American express service firm FedEx may establish an international air transport center in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone in the central province of Quang Nam (Vietnam). Speaking at a conference held in HCMC yesterday to announce the Government’s decision on establishment of the country’s first such zone, the provincial government said it would work with FedEx over the project soon.”I have met FedEx representatives and found that the corporation has shown keen interest in building such a center for Asia,” provincial Chairman Nguyen Xuan Phuc told the conference.
