Mail delivery grinds to halt in protest

Delivery of up to a half million letters ground to a halt today with the 24-hour closure of all sorting facilities attached to 600 sub-post offices in rural parts of the country. Members of the Irish Postmasters’ Union intend to shut down sorting of mail for two days each week until Christmas unless there is settlement of their dispute over payments with An Post. The union is planning a second shutdown on Friday. An Post said last night it considered the postmasters’ action a breach of contract. A spokesman pointed out the company had offered the postmasters a review of their involvement in the mails handling area a starting point towards resolution of the bitter row.

Postal Department may not be privatised

Under the present disinvestment policy of the government there is no possibility of privatisation of (the Indian) postal department. The services of this department come under social responsibilities and not under commercial services. Private sector is attracted more where the work involved is of commercial nature.

New £40m Distribution centre planned

Up to 600 jobs are set to be created in the Rugby area next year after Royal Mail bosses announced plans to build a pounds 40million mail distribution centre in Daventry.

The company yesterday announced proposals for a huge hub at DIRFT Logistics Park.

The centre, due to open next August, would employ 600 people, although hundreds of current employees are expected to transfer from the company’s existing sites in Wednesbury, Nottingham and Northampton.

Royal Mail's war with regulator intensifies

Postcomm, the post regulator, has written to MPs accusing the Royal Mail of “straightforward scaremongering” over proposed controls on the price of a stamp. The row broke out after Royal Mail wrote to all 659 MPs warning that the new price regime would “choke the company” and the universal one-price service. In the letter Martin Stanley, the chief executive of PostComm, dismisses the Royal Mail as being far too pessimistic about the price control, which would let the price of first and second class stamps rise by 1p now, but would then freeze average prices until March 2006. Allan Leighton, the chairman of the Royal Mail, said: “Ours is a business in crisis, we’re taking this very seriously. From those comments, PostComm is not.”
