EU law may scupper Consignia congestion charge hopes

Consignia’s hopes of avoiding having to pay congestion charges to drive Royal Mail vans in to central London could be scuppered by European legislation. It is a further blow to the cash-strapped mail operator, which warned this week that it would lose millions more each year if it had to pay the charge, which is to be introduced in the capital in February under plans devised by Ken Livingstone, London’s mayor.

POS Malaysia Bhd’s services are not up to peoples expectations, according to a survey by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Customers say they want a better level of services in terms of efficiency, operating hours and safe delivery. Other issues raised include need for parking space, timely notification, convenient location of post boxes, and user-friendly facilities.

Swiss Postal Service to be deregulated

According to a decision by the National Council (lower house) taken last Thursday, Swiss parcel post will be totally deregulated as of the year 2004.

As to first-class letters, the limit of the Swiss Postal Service’s monopoly will be reduced to items weighing no more than 100 grams by 2006. Motions by leftist parties to block these moves were defeated.

NIPOST Installs Security Screening in Mail Processing Centre

To facilitate easy detection of bombs and metals including prohibited items, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has installed a multi-purpose screening machine at the International Mail Processing Centre (IMPC-Air), Ikeja, Lagos. According to the Postmaster General of the Federation (PMG), Alhaji Abubakar Musa Argungu, the machine, which cost N18m, has the capacity to record the accurate number of mails processed, ensure careful handling of mail items and accelerate inquiry into loss of postal items.
