Consignia prepares to take on its regulator

Allan Leighton, interim chairman of Consignia, is preparing for a head-on battle with Postcomm, the newly formed Post Office regulator. Leighton is writing a strongly worded attack to Graham Corbett, Postcomm chairman, stating that proposals to open up the network to competitors are unworkable and could cause Consignia’s financial collapse.

TPG's Bakker: 2002 Will Be Challenging

Dutch postal, logistics and express operator TPG has bucked the present economic woes and turned in a net income of E 585m ($506m) for last year, representing a 23.7% increase on the previous year. However, the group warned that the economic climate in 2002 would be ‘challenging’ and would only provide low growth in the near future. TPG expected net income to grow from continuing operations by between 5% and 10%, which assumed an unchanged business climate. Turnover for 2001 was up nearly 13% at E 11.2bn and the company warmed the hearts of shareholders, with earnings per share climbing just over 24% to E 1.23. The company said it intended to pay a 2001 final dividend of E 0.38 per ordinary share, which represented a payout ratio of 30.9% in line with its policy.

The express delivery business is booming. The top two companies on the market, DHL Worldwide and TNT Russia, said Wednesday that their businesses grew 31 percent and 40 percent last year, respectively, although neither would divulge dollar figures.

USPS shippers annoyed by added delivery charges in Europe

The Postal Services arrangement with Consignia, in which the British post’s subsidiary delivers all USPS air packages throughout Europe. is off to a rocky start.
Businesses using USPS international services to send packages to Europe are complaining that their customers are getting hit with major duties and fees upon delivery of the packages. Many customers are refusing the packages. meaning they never reach their final destination, in addition. customers in Sweden were complaming in late January that they were still w aiting on Christmas packages. Sweden Post officials were worried the packages were hung up somewhere. Perhaps in Germany — the single entry point to Europe under the arrangement with Consignia.
