UPS announce first US air hub in China

UPS and the Shanghai Airport Authority conducted a formal signing ceremony in another step toward construction of the UPS International Air Hub at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai. Presiding over the ceremony were US Transportation Secretary Mary Peters and Vice Mayor of Shanghai Yang Xiong.
The UPS International Air Hub, scheduled to open in 2008, will be the first constructed by a US carrier and will link all of China via Shanghai to UPS’s international network with direct service to the Americas, Europe, and Asia. It also will connect points served in China by UPS through a dedicated service provided by Yangtze River Express, a Chinese all-cargo airline.
The ceremony marked the signing of the operating agreement and lease contract for the hub. These agreements are a direct result of the Agreement on Sino-US Civil Aviation Transportation Air Services signed by the Chinese and US governments in July 2004.
Over the past five years, UPS has invested approximately USD 600 million in China, including its successful transition to become the first wholly owned foreign express carrier in China.
When the hub opens, it will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and UPS will increase its capacity into Shanghai by “up-sizing” aircraft from the current MD-11s to Boeing 747-400s.

Pitney Bowes leaders describe global business opportunities

Dramatic changes in technologies, regulations and customer preferences are reinventing the global mailstream, and the top management of Pitney Bowes Inc. said today this means new growth opportunities for the 87-year-old company.

President and Chief Operating Officer Murray Martin, who becomes Pitney Bowes’ new CEO on May 14, told investors and analysts that the growth strategies that were put in place several years ago are working, and the company remains committed to expansion in the fastest-growing segments of the global mailstream.

“Over a quarter of our total revenue comes from businesses acquired since 2001, and the growth rate for these businesses is roughly double the growth rate for the businesses we were in when we began,” Martin said. “We think that the new businesses could constitute more than 50 percent of our revenue by the end of the decade.”

Martin outlined six strategic priorities for Pitney Bowes: maintain and grow the company’s healthy cash flow; increase value delivered to customers; improve operating efficiency; solidify the performance of the core mailing business; expand internationally; and focus on high-growth areas of the mailstream.

“Postal reform is complex,” Critelli said, “but in the aggregate it will be highly beneficial to Pitney Bowes. It allows the Postal Service to respond flexibly to the rapidly-changing needs of senders and recipients through market-driven dynamic pricing, frequent price adjustments, and lots of product and service innovation. This is an optimal environment for Pitney Bowes.”

Postal liberalization in Europe is proceeding more slowly and on a country-by-country basis, Critelli said. He asserted that Pitney Bowes has “winning strategies” that will serve the company well in “this highly divergent” environment. These strategies include a focus on small- and medium-size business customers, partnering with national posts for cross—border mail delivery, and selling more advanced systems for online postage and self-service postal kiosks.

Spanish Postal Service Deploys Sybase iAnywhere RFID Technology

Sybase iAnywhere today announced that Correos, the Spanish Postal Service, has deployed its RFID Anywhere(tm) software platform in one of the largest RFID projects in Europe. Using RFID Anywhere, Correos has introduced a radio frequency control system, called Q-RFID, in 16 Automated Processing Centers (APCs) throughout Spain and in four other bulk Admission Centers, enabling the company to ensure quality control and the traceability of postal deliveries.

Correos’ successful implementation of one of the largest RFID projects in Europe highlights the potential of RFID solutions. The state-controlled company required its RFID solution to be integrated into the Correos computer systems, resulting in the purchase of 13,000 passive electronic labels and installation of more than 2,300 permanent antennas and over 331 readers for the 16 APCs and the additional Admission Centers. The RFID Anywhere-powered solution gives Correos the ability to monitor the status and transit time of a letter at each stage of the delivery process, allowing the company to oversee the entire process and adopt corrective measures when a fault is detected in the system. Correos is one of the earliest to use RFID technology to comply with the standards set by the European Union (ETSI EN 302 208-1 and EPC GEN 2) and to be approved at the state level by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade.

Post Office plans causing concerns

Rural sub-postmasters and their customers in north Wiltshire are fearful and angry about proposed Government cuts, according to new research.

The Government believes the current network of post offices is unsustainable and needs restructuring.

In December 2006, it published a consultation document including proposals to end a special subsidy payment for rural post offices.

The Chippenham-based Citizen’s Advice Bureau surveyed a selection of postmasters and discovered that more than half would be forced to close as a result of the new measures. It says this will have devastating affects on the community.

CAB manager Sheila Venn said: “We know that for many local people, who come to us for advice, the local post office provides an invaluable service, whether it’s to buy groceries or cash pensions.

According to the research, which surveyed 15 sub-post offices in north Wiltshire in January, 63 per cent of sub-postmasters surveyed had worries for their customers and 91 per cent were concerned about the negative affect on the local community.
