FedEx announces increase in daily capacity between Vietnam and global markets

FedEx Express announced it had launched a new Airbus A310 flight service to Vietnam to meet the country’s increasing demand for reliable time-definite express services. The new service increases FedEx capacity into and out of the country fivefold, to more than 30,000kg a day.

As a result of the new service, customers also enjoy an improvement in transit times into and out of the capital, Hanoi. Customer cut-off and transit times out of Ho Chi Minh City are unchanged.

Since FedEx first established operations in Vietnam in 1994, the company has worked to support the country’s efforts to become a key export market.

The upgraded Vietnam service also strengthens FedEx AsiaOne Network, which connects 19 key Asia cities with more than 400 intra-Asia flights each week. The network is interconnected with FedEx global network – covering North and South America, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

US Mail volume down 9 Billion

The U.S. Postal Service will ask for a 23 percent increase in its federal appropriation in the next fiscal year as it copes with a dramatic decline in mail shipping this year.

The USPS says mail volume will be down some 9 billion pieces in the current fiscal year from last year, partly because of the downturn in the American economy.

The USPS says it is cutting costs by reducing work hours for its employees because it must “take steps now to shore up its business.”
But the Postal Service says it will also need sharply more funding from the federal government to keep its operations on track. The Postal Board of Governors approved on Wednesday (24th September) a USD 144.6 billion appropriation request for the 2010 fiscal year, up from USD 117.7 million the USPS requested for the 2009 fiscal year.

Co-op reveals strong food sales results

The Co-operative Group (Co-op) has posted record results for the first half of the year, including a 43.5 pct rise in sales to GBP 2.4bn at its grocery business.

It said that like-for-like first half sales jumped by 5 pct, as the market overall saw sales rise by 4.6 pct. Trading profit at its food arm jumped 67.7 pct.

Such success occurred, the Co-op said, thanks to the expansion of its range and improvements to existing outlets.

Chief executive at the retailer Peter Marks remarked that this has been an “exciting” time and the food side of the business is “rejuvenated”.

And he said the company’s position as a community retailer can be consolidated following the agreement to purchase Somerfield.

But Marks added that the remainder of the year is likely to be very competitive as the credit crunch – along with inflation pressures – continue to make the market tough.

Total profit at the Co-op, including its pharmacies, funeral service and travel section, stood at GBP 197.6m (before payments to members).

Various moves have been made by the organisation in recent times, such as the introduction of a Yorkshire range, the creation of mini-banks in stores and a sustainable fish sourcing policy.

U.S. Postal Service freezes hiring & promotions

The U.S. Postal Service has indefinitely frozen all hiring, promotions and other personnel changes in its latest response to a worsening financial position.

“A freeze on all organizational structure changes is effective immediately,” USPS Chief Human Resources Officer Anthony Vegliante wrote in a memorandum to agency officials. “The freeze includes position upgrades, additions to complement, position neutral exchanges, and requests for new positions.”

A postal service spokesman confirmed the memo amounts to a hiring freeze.

In an unusual meeting Monday, Postmaster General John Potter briefed the leaders of large postal unions and managers’ associations on the freeze, people familiar with the meeting said.
Postal officials are expected to brief the Postal Board of Governors on Wednesday.

The postal service has said it may lose USD 2 billion this year, but some analysts guess the final figure will be higher, citing new figures that show a USD 960 million loss in August.

The organization is likely to seek a significant postal rate increase next year, two industry observers said.

French postal workers protest privatization move

Tens of thousands of French postal workers went on strike on Tuesday (23rd September) in protest at plans to open the country’s mail network to private investment, post office operator La Poste said.

Postal unions say allowing private capital in would be the first step toward privatization, and a sell-out of a public institution most French are happy to see run by the state.

But its leadership says it needs 3 billion euros (USD 4.40 billion) to get into shape for competition when the sector opens fully in 2011 in accordance with European Union rules.

Any move towards privatization would require the postal service to become a public limited company instead of a branch of the civil service.

La Poste said in a statement that some 25 percent of employees were taking part in the one-day protest at around 0900 GMT. The operator employs around 300,000 in total.

The government has yet to voice an official position on the investment plan sought by the group’s management, but President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for a commission to discuss the matter for two months from October.
