Sri Lanka looks to upgrade branches

Sri Lanka’s minister of post has said the country will strive to upgrade its post offices. Jeewan Kumaratunga said that all the post offices in Sri Lanka will be networked and equipped with modern facilities in order to provide a better service to the people.

Under the programme, the post offices will be equipped with computers, Internet, fax, wire lines and wireless access, the minister said.

The Ministry hopes to obtain new vehicles to deliver mail. Primary focus will be the rural areas under the upgrading of the post offices.

Minister Kumaratunga said the employees of the Postal Department would be trained in use of modern technology.

Around the clock special operation room will also be set up to avoid postal delays, the Minister of Posts said.

Sri Lanka has a network of 6,500 post offices.
