Philippines Post CEO tells UNI Apro he will consult with workers on modernisation

The UNI Apro Post & Logistics Committee, meeting in Manila, had a good exchange of views with the CEO of PhilPost, Mr Hector Villanueva who came and addressed the meeting. He told the meeting that unless they wanted privatisation they needed to make sure the post company was making a profit, they needed to give incentives to the Government so they would want to keep their investment. One of the things the company needed to do to stay profitable was to modernise and use new technology. UNI told the Mr Villanueva that while unions weren’t opposed to new technology and modernisation, they wanted to be consulted and to be able to ensure their members were re-skilled, retrained and given new jobs and the the work wasn’t outsourced. Mr Villanueva gave assurances that the union would be an integral part of the decision making over modernisation.
He also told unions attending the UNI-Apro meeting that PhilPost was one of the first fully deregulated markets in the world where all post was subject to competition since 1991. He said the company was doing well competing with new entrants and in reality it was PhilPost that still had to provide the Universal Service, but that was now a difficult task with falling volumes of mail.

Canada Post signals changes for postal delivery

UNI’s Canadian affiliate, CUPW has advised that Canada Post has told the union that it is to introduce a technology update programme, called “Modern Post”. A central part of Canada Post’s “Modern Post” automation program is the new delivery model for letter carriers and Mail Sorting Centres. The main points of this new model include:
• 80pct of letter carrier routes in major urban areas to be affected, as well as about 35pct of all RSMC routes.
• About 90pct of letter-sized mail will be sequenced to line of delivery by machines in plants.
• Two or three letter carriers will use each A-62 case in shifts to sort the rest of the letter mail, flats, and packets.
• 80-85pct of letter carrier routes would be motorized where the new “Delivery Model” is in place.
• Motorized letter carrier routes would deliver all items for their delivery area, including parcels.
• Foot routes will remain in high density areas, generally the downtown core of cities with MSC parcel delivery in these areas.

US Postal workers promote using the US Postal Service

US postal workers are being encouraged to give the US Postal Services marketing department, new leads to business in a cooperative effort to try and boost postal revenues. Workers who know their jobs depend on high volumes of mail are being encouraged to “submit a lead” to the USPS marketing department when they encounter potential customers in their daily lives. If for example they are ordering some goods on the Internet and they don’t have an option to choose that the goods are delivered by the USPS, they are encouraged to pass on that “lead” to the marketing department to follow up and see if it will generate more postal business. One of UNI’s US affiliates, the NPMHU, has joined with the USPS in rolling out a programme to their members to be part of the “Submit A Lead” campaign to help the USPS boost revenues in the very difficult economic environment.
