Jersey Post expands its electric delivery fleet

Jersey Post has invested in  20 new electric bicycles for its postal delivery fleet, bringing the total number of electric bicycles to 35.

The Pedego Stretch Cargo electric bicycles were first trialled earlier this year from local bike shop, Coop Bikes and following the success of the trial, Jersey Post will begin phasing out the last of the traditional 3-geared postal bikes used on its 37 cycle-based delivery rounds.

The Pedego Stretch Cargo electric bicycles can carry up to 100lb of cargo, which helps improve delivery efficiency by allowing postal workers to move heavier loads more quickly whilst still delivering on bikes.

Niall McClure, Managing Director of Postal Operations, said: “The electric bikes are a great addition to our fleet. With the increase of parcel volumes and lead up to Christmas, these eBikes will be able to support our postal workers and provide more timely deliveries by allowing them to take more volume and weight, especially on days with full, heavy postal rounds to deliver to.”

In 2016, Jersey Post implemented a cleaner delivery fleet strategy where it purchased several Pashley electric-powered bicycles and Nissan e-NV200s electric vans, resulting now in more than half of the vehicle fleet being electric.

Jersey Post will continue to invest in electric bicycles and vans and aims to purchase more in 2020.
