Hazardous deliveries for family firm

A Family-run distribution business has helped secure the future of its workforce by joining a new network dedicated to the movement of hazardous goods throughout the UK.

Total Logistics Products (TLP) employs 32 workers at its headquarters at the Lymedale Business Park, Newcastle.

The firm jumped at the chance of joining the new Hazchem Network, which has been created to respond to a growing requirement by major chemical companies, which have been looking for a fast, efficient and cost-effective way of collecting and delivering products in smaller quantities more frequently.

The Hazchem Network will initially consist of 20 members, all of whom have extensive experience of moving hazardous goods on pallets safely throughout the UK.

To join, potential members have to undergo an on-site technical audit by the safety and technical director and chartered chemist Ali Karim, who helped set up the network with Jim Scanlan, managing director.

TLP was established 14 years ago and initially operated from a site in London Road, Newcastle.

The business, which specialises in express delivery of parcels, pallets and letters, switched to its present site three years ago.

Martyn Bowers, operations director, runs the firm with sister Anita and their parents William and June Bowers.

Martyn said: “We saw there was a market place for the express delivery of hazardous goods.

“Hazchem approached us and we were delighted to join. The decision to join the network will provide security for the people we employ. It’s another feather in our cap.

“We have a dedicated team who will handle hazardous freight distribution requirements with great care and attention to detail.”

The Hazchem Network will accept all classes of hazardous material excluding radioactive, explosive and biologically infectious materials.

Their centre of operations is a specially modified 56,000 sq ft hub near Rugby.

Managing director Jim Scanlan said: “All Hazchem Network members have been thoroughly audited to ensure they meet the highest quality standards in operations.

“Since going live we have already moved more than 1,000 pallets and the number is growing.”
