GLS reports record revenues

General Logistics Systems B.V. (GLS), the European parcels, express and lo-gistics service provider continues to grow strongly.

GLS Group’s revenues increased by 13.5 per cent to 1.5 billion euros – an increase of 180 million euros. The strength of its European network is demonstrated by the 26 per cent growth in international shipments.

Volume growth together with continuing efficiencies contributed to a 37 per cent in-crease in Earnings Before Interest and Tax. During 2005/6 GLS increased capital expenditure to over € 60 million to support its growth with the focus on expanding and modernising the physical network infrastructure and on developing and enhanc-ing IT systems.

“It is very encouraging to see the progress made by the group’s companies during 2005/6”, says Rico Back, CEO of GLS B.V. “In every major market we delivered revenue growth coupled with an increase in new customers.”

Further growth and increased investments planned

GLS has ambitious plans for 2006/7: revenues are targeted to grow further to 1.6 bil-lion euros. Over 100 million euros will be made available for capital expenditure to support the continued expansion. Significant investments in hubs and depots are planned in Germany, France, Denmark, Hungary and Poland. GLS will also continue to strengthen its networks in Italy and Spain.

In parallel with the expansion of its physical network, GLS is continuing to harmonise IT systems. By the middle of 2006, most of the GLS companies will be equipped with new scanner technology. Back: “For GLS, state-of-the-art standardised IT systems are an essential tool for realising a consistently high level of quality throughout Europe.”

Express shipments by air

GLS will strengthen and expand its position in the European express market. In spring 2006, a GLS operated air network for express shipments will be introduced. GLS will successively connect its ground-based European area networks with each other by air line hauls in order to provide a 24 hour express service.

The introduction of an air network will complement GLS’ traditional strength in ground-based parcel and express delivery across Europe and will provide customers with a cost effective alternative to existing Express operators.
