Holland TNT Post Group, Swiss Post pact is part of broader strategic alliance

Holland TNT Post Group and Switzerland’s postal service, Swiss Post, have agreed to a joint venture “unique in offering a broad range of services,” a TPG spokeswoman said.

The agreement, which comes on the heels of a similar deal with China’s post office, is TPG’s first joint venture with a European postal authority. It will cover both domestic and international logistics, mail, express and e-commerce services, according to TPG spokeswoman Debbie de Wagnaar. “At the moment some things are still being defined,” she said. “Domestic express and e-commerce are two areas under discussion.”

The joint venture has not yet been named and is only part of what the companies describe as a broader strategic alliance. According Reto Braun, head of Swiss Post, worldwide cooperation with TPG “marks the opening of the Swiss Post to global markets.”

“This is an excellent synthesis between the worldwide, highly efficient TNT network and the recognized reliability and high quality of Swiss Post,” said Ad Scheepbouwer, CEO of TPG. TPG also hopes to develop closer relationships with several Swiss multinationals that rely on Swiss Post for domestic services.

Last year, the state-owned and tightly regulated Swiss postal service had revenue of $3.5 billion. TPG is a publicly traded company, formed after the privatized Dutch post office bought TNT Worldwide Express, and had revenue in 1998 of $7.7 billion.
