Fight to preserve Swiss Post

Swiss unions and Social Democrats are fighting against deregulating the Swiss Post, reports World Radio Switzerland. The article continues:

In five months the groups have gathered some 110,000 signatures for a “strong Post.”

The Post has been cutting branches, especially in rural areas of Switzerland, replacing them with home service or desks in other businesses.

Eric Voruz, a Social Democrat MP and former postman says services must be maintained.

The unions claim the Swiss public wants a Post present in the entire country funded by profits from Postbank and a still-intact monopoly on letter delivery.

Federal lawmakers are set to review the National Postal Act this fall.
