Senior appointments made at DHL Global, DHL Freight

Deutsche Post DHL has created a new chief operating officer position within its DHL Global Forwarding unit to drive development of DHL’s air and ocean freight activities. Thomas George, who was chief executive in DHL Freight, has been appointed to the new role with immediate effect, with Amadou Diallo stepping up from his role as chief executive of DHL Global Forwarding in Africa and Southeast Asia to become CEO of DHL Freight.

Reporting directly to DHL Global Forwarding CEO Roger Crook, George will take charge of Global Air and Ocean Freight operations, including associated value added services, with the aim of harmonising the various DHL freight processes and strengthen the network model.

George joined Deutsche Post DHL in 2004 as a member of the board responsible for strategy and marketing at DHL Express Europe, and has been CEO for DHL Freight since 2008.

In his new role, he will continue to be a member of the company’s Global Forwarding and Freight Management board under his new role.

Commenting on the appointment, Crook said George had made “tremendous improvements” in the DHL Freight’s road freight business during his time as CEO, leading to a turnaround for the company.

“I am very pleased that Thomas George accepted the challenge to take on this new role,” Crook added.

The creation of the COO position at DHL Global Forwarding came just a few weeks after Deutsche Post created a chief commercial officer for the whole of DHL as the company seeks a greater co-ordination of the different divisions and activities within its express and logistics arm.

DHL Freight

Diallo, who has been a regional CEO for DHL Global Forwarding since 2008, takes charge of DHL’s international road and rail freight forwarding business as CEO of DHL Freight.

Prior to his regional CEO role, his career at Deutsche Post DHL has included being CFO at DHL Logistics in the UK, and managing director overseeing the integration of DHL’s US logistics acquisition Exel into the DHL Logistics unit.

Diallo will also report to Roger Crook as CEO of DHL. His previous role leading DHL Global Forwarding in Africa and Southeast Asia will now be split, with responsibilities handed to Thomas Nieszner, the CEO of DHL Europe/Central and Eastern Europe, and Kevin Leung, the CEO DHL Global Forwarding Asia Pacific.
