Polish Post Office price increase

Consumers have been served the traditional depressing new year fare of many announcements of price increases. In what appears to be a concerted campaign to kill off any festive spirit left a wave of increases has been announced. These are apart from increases that consumers already knew about, like the imposition of a 7 percent rate of VAT on flats and houses sold by developers, or the increase on excise duty leading to an extra ZL0.04 to ZL0.08 on a litre of fuel. The Post Office has announced that it is to increase its charges by an average of 5.9 percent, with a stamp for a local letter or postcard going up from ZL1 to ZL1.1. The Post Office said that increases are necessary to conform to EU standards. Consumers will be hoping that the post office will conform in terms of service not just prices. Coach and rail carriers are also looking at potential price increases, with the increase in the price of fuel making these depressingly likely. Air tickets will rise by 2-3 percent, in line with IATA prices worldwide. gjjh 5-6 January issue of Rzeczpospolita p. A1
