Consignia Legal Threat
Postal group Consignia has been threatened with legal action after reports that deliveries to thousands of rural homes in Scotland have been cut back to save money.
The Communication Workers’ Union said it was “astonished” at the lack of consultation and pledged to challenge the move in the courts if necessary.
Deputy general secretary, John Keggie said cutting the six days a week delivery service would breach the 1998 Postal Services Act.
He added: “The Government will need to intervene if this is taking place because it will be the thin end of the wedge for rural services.”
‘Heaven and earth’
Media reports said that 2,284 rural homes in Scotland have stopped receiving deliveries on a Saturday.
A Consignia spokesman said that the Royal Mail delivered more than 80 million items a day to 26 million addresses nationwide.
“We are absolutely committed to the universal service and move heaven and earth to deliver to isolated communities and far-flung places,” he said.
“To suggest that we are shirking that responsibility is totally incorrect.”
