Contract threat to ‘thousands’ of Post Offices

The future of many post office branches may depend on one single contract the group is hoping to win. More than 5,000 Post Offices could be forced to close if the postal organisation fails to win a key Government contract this summer, the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters (NFSP) has warned.

Such widespread closures, which would account for almost half of the UK’s 11,800 branches, would be “catastrophic” for millions of Britons, the group said.

The contract in question relates to the DVLA, the Government’s car licensing division which is subject to significant cost-cuts.
