FedEx expands Eco-Driving initiative to Europe and Middle East

FedEx Express has launched a big push across Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa to change the daily driving habits of its courier drivers. The company’s Eco-Drive programme aims to coach drivers how to improve the efficiency of their driving, and thereby cut down on fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

It also seeks to cut vehicle accident rates with awareness on general road safety.

Kicking off in the United Arab Emirates before expanding to Switzerland, the effort comes as another phase of the programme first launched in Japan two years ago.

Beth Galetti, vice president of planning and engineering at FedEx Express EMEA said: “The Eco-drive program has created excitement at FedEx Express; our team members are proud to be empowered with the knowledge and skill set to drive in a more environmentally sustainable fashion.”

FedEx Express has more than 2,000 vehicles operating in its EMEA region, which covers around 123 countries and territories, and this year has been considerably expanding with the opening of 38 new stations in six markets, along with acquisitions including Polish courier firm Opek and French transport company TATEX.

The company said its Eco-Drive programme would provide drivers with techniques to apply both on the job and outside of work, with thousands of courers in Europe, the Middle East and Asia set to increase their awareness of sustainability and safety issues.

Galetti said: “We understand that every investment—both large and small—counts in creating a more sustainable future for the company and our planet. We are highly enthusiastic about the tangible ways the Eco-drive program can benefit the company’s environmental performance while also helping point the way forward for our industry.”
